My first day at Ballet?

My first day at Ballet?

I started my first class at 14, I wore a black leotard, black skirt, pink ballet tights and ballet shoes, becuase that is our uniform. If you don't have the shoes yet they aren't nessecary for the first class, just wear socks. Black is okay for nearly every studio, if they didn't mention that they had a studio uniform or you needed to wear specific colours they are either ok with anything or don't expect you to go buy anything yet. For your first class comfortable (but neat) clothes and socks really are ok, like black leggings/tights and a tank top for example. If you don't like that option, a cheap black leotard and pink ballet tights would be a good choice, you can get them from target for $12 (if you live in aus). Wear your hair back in a bun, so it doesn't flick in your face. When you are standing, even if not dancing stand tall, don't slouch, this annoys most teachers. It really depends how old you are to what knowledge is expected or taught. She will most likely expect you to catch on pretty quickly with all the 5 basic positions, so I would just good them or something and practice them. Just watch some YouTube videos or something and make sure or familiar with a few basic steps and moves (you don't have to memorize the weird names just yet) so you dont find yourself getting confused. Take a waterbottle, spare bobby pins, an extra hair tie, deodorant if you want. You don't really need much. With pointe, once again it really is determined by your age. If your a teenager, it may take 1 or 2 years of your lucky. Could take up to 8 if your feet and ankles aren't very strong. So, for the next 2 weeks, I am setting you homework. Learn the basic postitions, know how to do a basic pirrouette, stretch your legs and hips (to improve your turnout) if your not already in splits and try to improve your back flexibility or arch (once again, if it's not already fairly flexible) and do various ankle and leg strengthening excersises.

Some stretches I like are; sitting on the floor with one leg straight behind you and one infront but tucked in, like splits with the front leg not fully extended. the butterfly, sitting with your feet together pulled towards you as far as they can go and legs bent. backwards frog, stomach on the ground legs tucked up behind you with feet touching (if your feet can't touch the ground in this stretch you need to do this a lot or do lots of stretches to increase the mobility of your hip joints).

Some excersises; standing against a wall, slide down into a sittin position ( without a chair obviously) and hold until you really can't hold it anymore, you have to be near collapsing to stop. standing straight lifting your heels of the ground (tippy toes) and bringing them back down just off the floor, do this repetively then hold the tippy toe position. the lunge (this can also help flexibility if ou straighten either the front or back leg when you hold it)

Okay, good luck! :)

First day at ballet: what to expect?

First day at ballet: what to expect?

Oh your going to LOVE it! I have taken ballet all my life... (since I was 4, I'm now 15.) You will learn the Body positions, feet positions, arm positions, cleay, relavay, barre, (sorry I don't know how to spell french words lol) and you will learn many other basics. You may even learn how to "spot" and turn. And it seems simple and easy, but you will learn how to skip, gallop, and other exercises like that. You will need to get your toes very strong, especially if you want to to point (aka toe) in the future. You will need to also practice not bending the knees, in ballet almost all the time they need to be straight. You will also need to exercise your legs and make them stronger. (as you continue, the stronger your legs, the easier.) But you will learn the very basics you need to preform and do ballet. It's good to also try and know most or all of the words/vocab. It helps a LOT when trying to figure out what she/he is wanting you to do. Hope this helped! And enjoy! Ballet is super relaxing, fun, and a great way to express yourself. Oh also if you want to try more dances, go for tap and jazz next. Both super fun and really cool to learn. (I also have taken them since I was 4) Yes, ballet will be hard at times, but keep on going. It will be worth it! Never give up and PRACTICE, practice, practice.

Holidays also on this date Friday, February 7, 2025...
