Bakeshop and cake design are well-liked pastimes, and Cake Decorating Day is all about going wild. Cupcake society suggests that we all need to be making nutritious cake frameworks, monuments and sculptures-- yet occasionally sprinkles and nutritious ball bearings are a lot more fun! Allow your creative imagination cut loose!

I got most of my info re cake decorating by looking at books in the library and at craft stores etc (this was before the internet).

But thought I'd mention my favorite average-joe home tool for cake decorating, and that's the plastic "spatula" that's the main part of a foam paintbrush (underneath the foam)... it's the pefect flexibility for smoothing out frosting (while turning the cake on a turntable). I haven't looked for awhile, but some of the foam brushes had a non-solid interior part which didn't work well for spreading frosting, so I was always "feeling" brushes to see if they were solid inside or had holes.

Cheapie plastic turntables for spices, etc., are another good home tool for cake decorating.

You'll want to choose an interesting angle of cake decorating like:

wedding cakes or cake toppers for b'day cakes

3 dimensional decorating (towering cake decorations)

decorating themes: floral, cartoon (kids), romantic, religious, etc.

limitations of cake decorating in previous centuries (limited or no access to ingredients like oranges and chocolate, no refrigeration, tough to decorate gingerbread)

unique commercial decorating techniques

can i bake cake and decorate it after 2 days?

It would likely dry out in that time. If you don't have time to bake and decorate on the same day, why not bake, trim, tort, wrap in film and foil, then freeze?
