Cartoonists Day

Cartoonists Day remembers the anniversary from the posting from the first colour cartoon, The Yellow Kid in 1895. Now cartoons really are a core element of many newspapers, guides and printed media, and also have had (and then have) a big impact on the culture.

Do you think I could be a cartoonist one day? (links)?

Yes you can be whatever you want to be, it's not for other people (yahoo users) to say yes or no. You should start practicing more so you can be more accurate in your drawings. Focus on proportion and small details like hands etc. These are important if you want to be taken seriously when showing a portfolio. Your work needs to express how good you are.

At the moment your work tells me you have been drawing for a while, but it doesn't tell me you are very experienced. You must practice more and then your work will express how good you really are. Remember you will be competing with other people who want to be cartoonists and at the moment they are likely to have better pictures.

Luckily drawing is one of them things where age does not matter, so mentioning your age has no impact on your drawings. Continue to practice until you feel you can look at your drawing and say "WOW" every time.

Good luck!

Cartoonists these days use computers for their coloring. Hardly ANY cartoons are hand-animated or colored because it's too time-consuming and requires more people than a computer-animated cartoon.

Adobe After Effects is one program that cartoonists use often. Color and style is often created in Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop, then moved to After Effects to be put into motion.

Toon Boom is another popular program in the field of cartoon.

Do cartoonists usually work a regular day job or contractors? do they get royalties?

Do cartoonists usually work a regular day job or contractors? do they get royalties?

Totally depends.

The syndicated strips have cartoonists who usually don't have a 'day job', however the guy who does Dilbert does, so doing the cartoon is his side job. Syndicated stips get paid by the number of papers that the strip is in. I don't think that's called royalties though.

Most people who aren't syndicated do it as a side line for extra cash, as you can't make enough off sporatic sales or even semi-regular sales to make a living at it. No, no royalties unless you're talking book deals and reprints of those books. The strips themselves are just sold outright, you get one payment for them.

However, the more places that pick up your strip, the more you get paid.

Writing? Spelling - yes. Plot -- yes. Keeping the strip coherant and on target - yes.
