What exactly is civil air patrol?

Hi and thanks for asking about Civil Air Patrol (CAP). CAP was formed on Dec 1, 1941. We are still “The Eyes of the Homeland Skies.” For almost 70 years, we are still tun paidpaid professionals” who respond when needed for Emergency Service Missions and Homeland Security. Immediately after 911, when all aircraft were grounded, Civil Air Patrol planes were flying over the twin towers taking photos and sending them through the radio frequencies and directly to the federal agencies who required them. During floods, our cadets are filling sandbags and the aircrews are flying over taking photos on a daily basis so the authorities can see how the water situation has changed from one day to the next. During the Olympics in NY, photos were taken of autos that were in restricted areas. Authorities were able to respond immediately. If you have been watching our website, I am sure you have seen some of the missions that we have participated in . .. missing aircraft? We are there. . . .Missing Alzheimer patient? We can be there if requested by the Sheriff’s Office. Homeland Security? We practice with other Federal Agencies. We provide the required training needed for the jobs want to be part of.

CAP is open to students from the age of 12 and up and has an adult program for those over 18 years old. In response to your question on can you belong to two squadrons, the answer is that you can attend meetings for two squadrons. I am sure a cadet squadron (also known as either a Cadet Squadron or Composite Squadron) would appreciate having someone as yourself to be a role model for the cadets who need to see the importance of an education. You can join after filling out an application, getting finger printed and will be subjected to an FBI background check.. If you are in college, I am assuming that you are over 18. Therefore, you would have to join as an adult. There are no programs that I am aware of to help adults with flying training but if you join a squadron with an aircraft, you can check into being a mission scanner and work your way up to observer on an aircraft. If you have any other questions, please email me at marie.haberstroh@ohiowg.cap.gov.

Respectfully, Capt Haberstroh, Ohio Wing Pubic Affairs Officer, Civil Air Patrol

Kids aged 12 - 18 can join Civil Air Patrol (CAP). You typically join a local squadron. Squadrons usually meet once a week for a couple hours. There, you will learn the basics of being a cadet, military drill, leadership skills, aerospace topics (aviation history, how planes and rockets fly, weather, a little about aircraft engines, ect.) and some emergency services (ES) training. Your squadron (unit) will also have some outside weekend, day long activities every month or so.

During the school year you will probably have the opportunity to to attend higher level weekend activities hosted by a group (comprised of a number of squadrons) or wing (comprised of all the groups in your state). These could be day long emergency services training missions or general cadet activities, orientation flights, ect. There could also be weekend long encampments. Here, you are immersed in cadet training like the above or more. At these activities, you would stay the weekend in a barracks or some other facility.

During the Summer, CAP has a number of one or two week long activities around the country, or even internationally you will have the opportunity to attend. Flight encampments, military tours and orientations, Summer encampments, ES training encampments, International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE), ect.

You have some minimum participation requirement on the local level as a cadet, like participate more or less regularly at meetings. But the sky is the limit on the stuff you can do throughout the year.

...When I was in the military, stacking up medals was a standard technique of motivation.. Out here in civilian world, it's education and exageration of merit that counts for an individual.

-- The civilian sector could give a hoopla about a medal.. Then again, if you're working for law enforcement, it can be of some importance. I don't know the details of civil air patrol.. But, in fact, it's an easy research quest. As follows:

Speaking of this, when it comes to heroic efforts in wartime, most soldiers/ Marines/ and Sailors could give two shits about a particular medal-- as it doesn't take away what was just experienced.

As for the civilian sector, civilian awards are handed out by the govt. that reflect the individuals efforts that contribute as a whole to the govt. in itself, rather than on the individual level for the U.S. military and foriegn alies.

Take advantage of this opportunity and recieve your recognition. I thank you for whatever it is you may have accomplished to be in honor of such a device.

God Bless!
