Monday, December 30, 2024 is Falling Needles Family Fest Day 2024. Falling Needles Family Fest It is Falling Needles Family

What are ten facts about you?

These are ten random facts about me, in a completely random order:

1. I adopted my cat Wally on July 19, 2009, the same day Walter Cronkite, one of my role models, passed away. I had my choice of kittens from the litter, and though they were all adorable and lovable, it was not challenging to pick the one for me at all. I was captivated by the smallest kitten good-naturedly observing his rambunctious brothers and sisters, and who was so affectionate when I approached him. Wally's full name is Walter Cronkitty.

2. My dad started the family tradition of naming our dogs after musicians we love when I got my first pet at age two, Madonna. We called her Maddie. We've also had Stevie (after Stevie Nicks), Remmy (REM), and Dylan (after Bob). My beautiful, beloved Golden Retriever is Bowie, after David Bowie. I've named all our cats after a person I admire. In addition to Wally we've had Bobby (Bobby Kennedy), Ellie (Eleanor Roosevelt), and Marty (Martin Luther). My little sister thought Marty's name was Smarty, so he also went by Smarty Pants, haha.

3. Whenever I pluck my brows I sneeze. And it's not just one dainty little sneeze, it's like a sequence of ACHOOs so startlingly loud it once awakened my napping brother in his room down the hall. Apparently I have an unusually sensitive trigeminal nerve that gets stimulated from the plucking and triggers a massive sneeze-fest.

4. I love to shower in the dark. Well, near-dark. I have fairy lights strung around my vanity mirror over the bathroom counter, and will turn them on at night when I need to shave my legs, but in the morning I rarely turn any lights on. If needed, I'll light a candle. I love to hook my iPhone up to portable speakers and play music while I'm showering or bathing because it creates this really serene, spa-like atmosphere. I prefer to illuminate my room just with candles as well, but after causing a small fire last year my dad forbid me from having more than one lit at a time.

5. I never finished kindergarten or went to grades one through five. The preschool I attended had a far more rigorous academic environment than what you'd expect for three-year-olds, and when we moved from London to LA I got bored very quickly with the typical ABCs and coloring curriculum, and was leapfrogged to kindergarten. I would finish the work quickly and distract others who were still concentrating by singing to myself out of boredom, so I got transferred to a school that didn't have any grade levels and instead grouped children based on their abilities. We were categorized by the room we were taught in instead of by our grade. So, technically, I never went to first grade through fifth.

6. I've always disliked sleeping. As a child I always pleaded to get out of napping or bedtimes, and I've never been the stereotypical sleep-craving teenager. I view sleep as a chore I have to complete for my wellbeing, and wish there was a way I could function with less of it. I'm a night owl and a morning lark. One summer at camp my bunkmates nicknamed me Bella Swan because I am drawn to the "vampire lifestyle" of not sleeping.

7. I hate vampires. As unenthusiastic as I am about sleeping, I actually despised the first Twilight movie so much I tried to make myself fall asleep in the theater. I still haven't finished watching "New Moon." I have an intense phobia of needles and blood. Therefore, I'm not very fond of creatures who need to drink blood for their survival.

8. I am obsessed with color, and especially green. I insisted on wearing something pink every day until I was six when green became my "signature color." It's the most vivacious and peaceful color to me, and virtually everything from my bedroom walls to my iPhone case and headphones are green. I love all colors, though. I became a painter because it was such a joy to work with them. Most other girls drooled over Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner while I fell in love with the color of Bella's bedroom walls. I even tracked down the color of the turquoise paint - Blue Spa by Benjamin Moore.

9. I do not have a green thumb. I've had so many lavender plants and orchids in my room or on my balcony, and I've somehow killed them all. I don't know if I'm overwatering, under-watering, not letting them get enough light, or if I am just kryptonite to plants.

10. I've struggled with mild depression since my early teens. I've never been clinically diagnosed with any mental health condition, but I've privately experienced some of the classic symptoms of depression. I am genuinely a hopeful and happy person, but it's not because I wake up every morning filled with joy. Just as a muscle will become untoned, inflexible and weak if it's not properly exercised, my mental fitness will deteriorate if I neglect it. I can become weighted down emotionally and swallowed up by sadness if I am not proactive about warding off depression. I run every morning in the sunlight to kick in the endorphins and dopamine, nurture my spiritual life, read something inspiring daily, and use art, music and dance therapy methods to release my emotions in a constructive way.

Fact 11: I'm really wordy.
