Jobs at the hospital?

Patient Access/Registration/Admitting - that's where I started at in the hospital five years ago. Can't complain either, with no degree and no experience, I started at almost $10 an hour as a PRN before eventually going part and full time.

There are different titles that different hospitals like to use, but it's the clerk or registrar position. It's fairly simple, you plug in people's info; you just have to pay close attention to enter information correctly from physician orders and insurance cards.

Typically the only job requirement is proficiency in typing, although the competitiveness of the market these days means you might have some competition.

Hospital Administration?

Hospital Administration?

First of all with hospital administration, it can be a very specific type of job. You are a step in the right direction by taking medical terminology, but a hospital administrator needs to take some more business courses, as well as some that relate to the hospital itself. There are programs that you can take, I am not sure of the correct names in Brisbane, but I know that here is Canada, you can take them at a few universities.

In order to get your "feet" wet, you might want to consider some of the following jobs to begin with, to get the experience and work your way up to become a hospital administrator:

1) Nursing Unit Clerk or Ward Clerk-- this allows you to still fill out the paper work, and to be able to work with multi-disciplinary health teams, but at the same time, it will allow you to become familiar with the wards, and how they work, and the general functioning. This job gives you exposure to processing doctor's orders, coordinating diagnostic tests such as x-rays, blood tests, and coordinate travel arrangements for patients such as transfer ambulance, taxi etc.

2) Admitting Clerk -- this is the type of person that checks people in for either admitting such as into the emergency dept, surgical department, or day diagnostic tests or surgeries. You will also get exposure as to how a hospital works.

3) Medical Secretary -- this is like a clerk position, but you also do way more in this job as well. You will go to meetings, and take notes and also prepare for them with catering, audiovisual equipment and so on as required. Depending on the role, you might also be responsible for helping with monitoring budgets, and expenditures.

4) Program Assistant -- this is like a clerk and secretary, but you're responsible for primarily keeping things together for a particular program such as "Renal" or "cardiac" etc.

These are more junior positions then an actual hospital administrator, and you might have a better chance at getting one of the above jobs to do without much experience. If they still require you to have a lot of experience, you mighr want to try one of the following:

1) Filing Clerk -- helps with fling away documents both manually and electronically as required.

2) Appointments -- approaching a hospital to see if you're able to help with making calls to remind patients of their appointments

3) Volunteering as a candystriper (read to the patients, or help with adhoc duties)

Hopefully this helps you.

Will the hospital call to ask for you medicare?

Will the hospital call to ask for you medicare?

Nothing. If his ID number is being used for his nursing care, no one else can use it for anything, especially not having the Medicare Card. The nursing facility must have his number to bill Medicare for their share of the cost. Original Medicare covers patients for up to 100 days in nursing facility. The first 20 days are covered totally. Days 21-100 cost $133.50 per day. After that, there is no Medicare benefit. He should apply for Medicaid to cover a longer period than 100 days. If he has Medicare Advantage, then there is no daily charge for the entire 100 days.
