Why is prostitution illegal?

The case for making it against the law to buy sex begins with the premise that it's base and exploitative and demeaning to sex workers. Legalizing prostitution expands it, the argument goes, and also helps pimps, fails to protect women, and leads to more back-alley violence, not less. This fight over legalization has been waged in the last few years over international human-trafficking laws and proposals to make prostitution legal in countries like Bulgaria, a movement that the U.S. government helped defeat. In 2004, the federal government expressed its position: "The United States government takes a firm stance against proposals to legalize prostitution because prostitution directly contributes to the modern-day slave trade and is inherently demeaning." The government also claims that legalizing or tolerating prostitution creates "greater demand for human trafficking victims." And yet, prostitution is legal in parts of Nevada, a companion to other cherished vices.

The counter, is shouldn't Nevada be over-run and awash in foreign sex slaves? They have legalized prostitution in some counties.. where is all the crime and human trafficking?

I'm certainly NOT an advocate for prostitution, but I am an advocate for doing what makes sense and what is right. This is one that can be debated either way -- but the arguments that are used for drug prohibition are largely used for prostitution and these arguments are flawed and simply wrong. The United States has conducted the largest most massive and most expensive study EVER in the history of mankind -- It is called the War on Drugs,.. Has cost Trillions, hundreds of thousands of lives, and hundreds of billions each year. The results of the 42 year long study? Our arguments and logic on prohibition are wrong. They may sound like they should work -- but through , again, the biggest study on earth they not only do NOT work, they cause a worsening of the problem.

What are your thoughts? Instead of looking at rhetoric by law makers, and politicians -- look at the statistics and facts behind ANY subject.. and you will find what is or isn't working. If it isn't working, then we STOP it immediately and then discuss what may be a better option to pursue for the 'problem'. We don't just keep throwing money and doing the same things while destroying our society and economy -- But, we do. Why?

I think prostitution can be , of course, morally wrong to most. However, if done at the woman's own will -- in an environment that is safe (not the streets) -- well, frankly, that is her decision not the governments.

I wouldn't touch a prostitute with a 10-foot pole.

Take care,

Why is prostitution illegal in the us?

Why is prostitution illegal in the us?

1. It does serve as a catalyst for the spread of disease and other biological pathogens. If legalized, it would only give more access to men and women who are obviously loose enough to have sex with anyone, causing diseases to spread.

2. Many times, prostitution is only one part of a much larger crime ring. The girls oftentimes answer to an abusive pimp, and are oftentimes murdered in the process. Prostitution is also oftentimes a front for crimes such as kidnapping, drug exchange, extortion, and urban terrorism.

3. An ineffective law should not be abolished just because someone suggests that the law is causing the offense, because we all know that's not true. California's legalization of marijuana demonstrates that.

4. It's bad for the economy if money is going into international affairs such as prostitution and the drug trade. Companies make more money off of monogamous relationships between regular and/or joined sexual partners.
