No special significance attached to May 5, here in India!

I see that you've heard of May 1...'Workers of the World Unite!"...for what???

PS: Men's Day in Romania?!? Someone care for that, LOL! All I ever heard were complaints about celebrating Women's Day and neglecting our hairy brethren :)

Edit: I gladly accept the invitation :) Thank You!

Looking forward to watching some choicest movies too :))

What is the difference between the role of Midwife in the US and in the UK?

What is the difference between the role of Midwife in the US and in the UK?

Essentially the midwife's role is the same wherever in the world you are. The international confederation of midwives' has a global definition of the role of a midwife,

"The midwife is recognised as a responsible and accountable professional who works in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period, to conduct births on the midwife's own responsibility and to provide care for the infant. This care includes preventive measures, the promotion of normal birth, the detection of complications in mother and child, accessing of medical or other appropriate assistance and the carrying out of emergency measures. The midwife has an important task in health counseling and education, not only for the woman, but also within the family and community. This work should involve antenatal education and preparation for parenthood and may extend to women's health, sexual or reproductive health and childcare." ICM (2005).

However, the day to day role and working environment of the midwife varies in different countries. Generally in the UK midwives' are the lead caregivers in normal pregnancies through the National Health Service, however in the US most pregnancies are lead by an obstetrician, in a private system however midwives do exist and can be paid for independently. These midwives' practice in much the same was as UK midwives, but form a smaller percentage of lead caregivers in pregnancy.

If you were considering becoming a midwife you mgiht find more information on the role of the midwife in both the US and the UK at www.studentmidwife.net, as well as useful information on the application process.

Good Luck!
