Kool Aid is a terrible idea. It never works, unless you have super light, porous hair, and even then it doesn't stay for very long, never more that a few days.

Nothing will lighten your hair without peroxide, which means that nothing you can find in your pantry will make your dark brown hair light brown.

If you want red streaks, you will probably need to bleach the streaks first, depending on how dark your hair is and what look you are going for. If you use a non-permanent red dye over your dark brown hair, you will have streaks that are still dark but have a red sheen to them. It can be very pretty, but if you are going for something a little more noticeable, buy a bleach kit and CAREFULLY separate the parts you want red. Bleach them down then cover with a non-permanent dye. I use manic panic and special effects, they are available at beauty supply stores, online, and at retail stores like Hot Topic. You could also try a box of permanent red dye from the drugstore and again, carefully separate the parts you want red. I wouldn't personally use that way because those colors are never true to the box and you never really know what color you are going to get in combination with your natural color and texture, but not everyone has access to a beauty supply store or money for a salon.

Also, if you are going for small streaks, I highly recommend either buying a highlighting kit with a cap or going to a beauty supply store and buying the cap itself-they are pretty cheap.
