National American Miss Personal Introduction?

Hi Yvonne,

You're a little stuck, but you have good judgment, for you are right in thinking that your introduction is a little plain. I'll give you some tips.

You are much more capable at fourteen than you were a few years ago, and in a few more years you will be much more capable than you are now. My point is that fourteen year olds, as good as you might be, are not world class writers, so with just a little help you might be able to present yourself in ways that will set you apart.

Thirty seconds may seem short, but it isn't. It's time enough to tell a whole story, and if you want to differentiate yourself, telling a story is a good way to do it. The reason to tell as story is to entertain your judges, because they will be having a hard time comparing you to others, and, no offense intended, but listening to fourteen year olds trying to say why they are special can be painful. So, if you can entertain as you inform, your judges will be greatly relieved and will give you high marks.

I recited what you have written so far, and it takes fifteen seconds to say. Every word uses up time, so telling a story in thirty seconds requires that you not waste a single word. This is good practice in any writing, for being terse gives writing punch. One rule for being terse, and if you study writing it's a rule you will hear, is to eliminate adverbs and adjectives. They aren't necessary and often detract rather than add.

For example, I wrote, "Your judges will be greatly relieved." I could have eliminated the word "greatly" and written, "Your judges will be relieved."

Following is a possible rewrite of what you have written along with some explanation.

We know you are a 14 year old girl, so you could eliminate that and write:

My passion is medicine and health.

To give a sentence most impact, put its most dramatic or important part at the end. The most dramatic part of writing about wanting to be a surgeon is to save lives. Also, we know you are not a surgeon now, so you could eliminate "one day," meaning later in life. So you could write:

My dream is to become a surgeon and save lives.

"Hitting the books" is kind of cute, but I'm thinking serious is a better tone. This is a stylistic choice that you must make. I know that High Honor Roll is better than Honor Roll, but is it bragging? Again, this is a stylistic choice, but I'd choose to eliminate it. The judges might not even know High Honor Roll exists, and I'm not sure it's going to make them think you're better. It might make them think, as I said, that you're bragging.

I like to swim too, and I'm musical. But if you're going to mention these things, make them more interesting. What stroke do you like to swim? Do you compete? If not why do you swim? How does it make you feel? What kind of music do you like to play. Have you ever composed a piece. These details are what I mean by telling a story, making yourself a person not just a list of dreams and achievement.

This is also true about being a surgeon. I'm not sure I'd choose to mention a particular branch of surgery, though if you said children's surgery that might make them think well of you. You might mention research, such as a surgeon attached to a research hospital.

I like your ending. It's like saying, "Here I am, Ta Da." Sort of like in gymnastics where the performers raise their arms at the end of a routine.

So here's a possible rewrite that will give you ideas. It also takes fifteen seconds to say, so you have another fifteen seconds in which to add rich detail or other parts of the story about who you are. If you want to, you can e-mail me anonymously via the link in my Yahoo profile, and I'll be glad to help you further develop and refine your speech.

My passion is medicine and health. My dream is to be a children's surgeon in a research hospital and save lives. I’m an Honor Roll student, I swim competitively (or I swim with friends to stay in shape), and I play piano and love Chopin. Coming to you from the wonderful town of _______, my name is Yvonne N.
