Working night shifts does affect your health generally, and this is particularly bad when you work varying shifts like sometimes on late and other times on early. It is not so bad if it is just for a year or so, but if you are on permanent night work it affects your body clock over a long period, and you are susceptible to more ailments because you have reduced immunity.

Usually people got paid more than day workers, but I have heard that a lot of workers nowdays are paid at the same rate, with no supplement. This is not right and you could certainly ask for compensation. However if it could be proved that you had ill health as a direct cause of your job, then you could make a damages claim against your employers. This is not always easy to prove, and your case would depend on what medical evidence you could provide.

Starting a family with a Swing Shift Worker...?

My husband has a rotating schedule, working 12 hour shifts 5 days a week, he also is in the national guard which takes him away for a weekend every month. He doesn't get to spend a lot of time with the kids. Usually he'll get home in the evening just as I'm putting them to bed, he'll read them a story and give them a kiss, and that's all he'll see of them. Or when he's working nights, he'll get home as we're eating breakfast and he'll eat breakfast with the kids, and then he'll go sleep most of the day. On his days off, he spends the entire day with me and the kids, and he definitely tries to squeeze as much fun into two days as he possibly can.

I do stay at home with the kids so that we don't have to pay for childcare. My husband doesn't make a ton of money, but it's enough to get by with careful budgeting, and we decided that having their mother raise them was more valuable than a big house and a fancy car. I do babysit fairly often and make some extra money from that.
