Newspaper Carrier Day

Newspaper Carrier Day celebrates the life and employing day of Barney Flaherty, which was the initial paper carrier (or paperboy), employed in 1833 by Benjamin Day, which was the publisher of the New york city Sunlight newspaper at the time.

Newspaper Carrier..........?

It has its moments...and its horrors. My son was a carrier for several years. On Sunday, he had to get up about 4 a.m. to get the big Sunday papers, then drag them around the community to subscribers. The other days, he would just walk around the community, dropping the papers off at peoples' houses. That wasn't too bad, except when it was pouring rain or so flippping cold his hands got too stiff to hold the papers.

Now this was a long time ago. He got 5 cents for each daily paper delivered, and 25 cents for each Sunday paper. I surely HOPE carriers have gotten a raise since then.

Do NOT pay anything to get started! (At least my son did not, and I have never heard since that kids had to pay anything to start.)

Good luck with your new job!

Being a newspaper carrier?

Being a newspaper carrier?

First, if my paper is not where it should be or if it's wet, then a carrier doesn't deserve a tip. A tip is for a job well done. It isn't simply because we should feel sorry for the carriers that they have a very low paying job. That's their problem!

I'd tip him if I had the money. I'd tip a lot more people if I could afford it. Perhaps the carrier should find a way back to school and get a better paying job that doesn't require tips to survive.

No, I couldn't do it nor would I want to THAT'S why I paid attention in school, got good marks, went to college and got a DECENT JOB! You should have done the same and can still do the same. Stop crying to us about how bad your job is; YOU chose it, not me! Perhaps McDonald's pays better.

newspaper carriers many people do not care about them?

newspaper carriers many people do not care about them?

My daughter took the job of delivering newspapers to make ends meet when her husband was out of a job and she couldn't afford a babysitter.

She was paid per newspaper even with 3 routes she was making maybe 200 a month.

She had to buy with that money the plastic sleeves and even the rubber bands! They were sold at the office for more money than than at Office Max for the same items!!

She had to be up at 4am in the morning and fold them for an hour and if it was raining put them in sleeves. Then she would take her new van and do stop and go's in the cold and the dark .. the rain and the fog. Half the porches were not lit so you couldn't see the address if you tried.

Some people demanded they be exactly on the porch, in a mail box, or on a particular part of the driveway.

There are no days off, no holidays, no vacations and no benefits.

If you were sick you had to find someone else to deliver your papers you try to think straight when you have a fever.

The newspaper office bills the customers because too many kids were getting knocked down and robbed of the money by cheap hoods and gangs. Changing delivery from late afternoon delivery to morning really stops any teen from delivering on their bikes unless they own a car.

So its really hard to get to know the customers between 4:30-6am most are not even up at that time!

Eventually newspapers will just be delivered by the mailman or picked up at newstands. Home delivery should be a thing of the past its just a totally thankless job for little money.

Totally understand where your coming from!

Holidays also on this date Wednesday, September 4, 2024...
