Many schools that I have talked to have really cracked down on excessive homework, though many continue to bog down students with 3+ hours of homework. I am a first grade teacher so I have a lot of control over how much homework my students get. I give little. The best theory I heard was 10 minutes per grade level (10 minutes for 1st, 20 for 2nd, 30, for 3rd and so on). With students having various classes and teachers I think it is up to the student to let the school know if there are excessive amounts of homework being given or when homework adds up to excessive amounts.

But we know exactly what it is like. We all went through high school, if you want to go to college it is much worse. We all went through college. The whiny bit will not work. You need to act mature and state your feelings without whining. The second you whine (like you did here...though you may be venting), a teacher will roll their eyes and ignore whatever you have to say. They will think you are being petty and waste of time.

Can we please send this quote to every senator and representative. Teachers know they are doing this and WE HATE IT TOO. Due to NCLB we have nearly been forced to teach to tests rather than to kids. Teaching the test isn't benefiting anyone. It just means we taught you how one particular test is scored and how to get higher scores on it.

Do you think that teenagers get too much homework these days?

Short answer IMO yes, kids of all grades are getting too much homework these days. It's nothing in my household to have a child at the table or on the computer doing homework until right before it's time for baths. My oldest is in 8th grade and right now her homework is 20 questions in math, doesn't sound like much but math is her weak class, she has a science report that has to be done by Friday between her and her partner they have to write 4 paragraphs and have something visual to go with the report, she also has nightly history or something in English. 2 of my children are in 3rd grade nightly they both of reading, math, and spelling.

The amount of homework, plus the number of hours in the day, plus the things we have to do i.e. dinner, bath, a few chores coupled with a child who is very hyper has become a horrible combination in my home.

Is there too much homework these days?

They give you homework so your brain doesn't forget the things you need to know to get the job you want..maybe its time management you need more than less homework. Maybe a study group with friends so you can be stuck doing work together. Take your work to the library so you can get out of the house. In some classes, you may even be able to get some of it done while still at school. Get your parents opinion on how they can help manage your time so you don't go crazy.
