Record Store Day

Record stores, right? With digital music, iTunes and Amazon . com, they almost appear a factor of history. But less than!Record Store Day is here now for all of us to understand the great pastime of moving through albums, trying to find deals, finding new things, or possibly something old that people lost a very long time ago and completely didn't remember about. It’s an chance for all of us to reminisce (“Oh wow, I did previously pay attention to this constantly after i what food was in school!”), to talk about (“I wager Kayleigh will like this, I’ll get her a copy”) and also to ponder (“What was Fatboy Slim on as he authored that one?!”).First and foremost, record stores let us take some time from our day and silently enjoy who we're. Tastes and inspirations are specific to everyone, so let’s celebrate this individuality somewhere full of music and artwork, where there’s always a person to request for any recommendation, one which isn’t in line with the ‘Smurfs Go Pop’ Compact disc you purchased online like a joke gift for any friend.

what is record store day?

Hello Record Store day is a big event in most countries where they release a bunch of new records... Such as re-releases, anniversary editions and Limited eds. Usually 7" in size!

It's on the 3rd Saturday in April every year. The aim is, to get people to actually visit/wait outside record stores instead of just buying online!

Hoping to get my hands on the new David Bowie Records this Saturday!

There's more information on the website, but here are the participating shops if you'd like to go and see!

Do you feel bad for record stores?

Record stores are a done deal. Their era is over. They have pretty much gone the way of 8-track tapes and cassettes. I was an AVID shopper at Tower records back in the 1980's. (There was one a block away from the University of Washington where I went to college). I went there EVERY DAY to look around. The university neighbourhood also had several other used record shops - I visited them on a daily basis as well between classes. All long gone. (Weeping). I no longer even have a turntable now. (That's a different story as to how that happened. I used to have a FANTASTIC album collection of like 400+ records, lost those as well). But yeah, it's all CDs and DVDs for me now. I must admit that they are more durable and more compact and the sound/image never degrades.

Even back then, clerks at such places ignored customers. I guess it was part of the 'coolness' of the job and they were 'trained' to do so LOL. They HAD a solid customer base, but they blew it.

I don't download music off websites - because I have heard of people getting slapped with REALLY hefty fines for downloading and then doing the file-sharing thing.

I actually became physically disabled about 10 years ago, so I do NOT have a lot of disposable income per month nor per year for the rest of my life. However, I DO have a DVD recorder with which I can burn whatever is available on YouTube onto DVD.

The stuff I burn is from the past, and I am not uploading it or file-sharing it, and I had in fact bought the artist's works that I burn, so I don't really feel guilty about it. It's there on the internet for free, and I have the ability to burn it for my own private use, so I do.

But I miss those days I used to spend haunting the used record shops looking for old albums.

What exactly is record store day and where is it celebrated?

Unless you collect vinyls or rare CDs, AND have a good or decent music scene, it's not worth going to.

It will be a bunch of local bands with occasionally someone famous who's there.

Call your local record stores (not places like FYE, actual record stores and music stores) and ask them about who's going to be there, what it is, etc.

Type all this into notepad while you're on the phone with them, then google the bands for their myspace page (just about every band has a myspace music page now) and ask for the list of records they'll have for Record Store Day and THEN decide if you want to go.

I was really excited until I discovered that my local record store (which I normally have huge respect for and am a dedicated customer of) is only having a few local hardcore and metalcore bands playing, and is only going to be selling a few hardcore, metalcore, and other popular records.

I'm a metalhead, and I don't like that -core stuff, so I'm not going because it thoroughly annoys me and I'm pretty disappointed.

I guess that's what independent shops have to do in order to keep shop once in a while though. I'll still go there and buy stuff, but I won't be going there this year for RSD.

Holidays also on this date Friday, April 19, 2024...
