Reptile Awareness Day

Habitat loss and the specter of extinction are significant concerns in the realm of reptillian existence. Reptile Day encourages awareness of other nutritional foods reptillian, encouraging researching various kinds of reptiles, their natural conditions and environmental challenges.

Disneynature’s Reptiles & Amphibians?

Actually, I wouldn't. Period. If I heard about, I would try to get an email campaign working to get them to devote their money to something else. There are enough misconceptions around about reptiles now, and the last thing we need is Disney adding to it. Remember, Disney likes to SELL things, meaning they go with popular culture and opinion. Presenting fact is pretty low on their priority list, and always has been.

If you don't believe me, most recent example that comes to mind. For those who don't know, they own ESPN. Up until last year, meaning the 2010 season, at least, they had a segment on most of the highlight shows called "Jacked up", highlighting the most violent hits of the week. Then the concussion awareness thing got bigger, between the CBA problems and the greater availability of research. The segment went away, and the same guys turned on a dime and started talking about player safety like it was amazing that the teams hadn't done more sooner, who could condone such behavior? Not that they were promoting the highlights a few months ago. With the "python fears" that have become more prevalent in recent years, that is what they would play to. They play to creating fantasies to entertain people. And almost every state in this country is trying to pass laws, and add to laws, that will restrict reptile ownership. And this would help that happen faster.

Sorry to be so long winded Nunu, but I am strongly against reptile ownership being banned, and this would be on the wrong side of that.

Science experiments with reptiles?

Science experiments with reptiles?

Absolutely fantastic question. Nice one.

Random ideas:

Could you do some kind of psychological experiment, teach him to navigate a maze, or get him to associate colours etc with food?

Or maybe something physical: measure the pressure exerted by his claws with plasticine? What kind of gait he has? see how far he can climb up a step? See how much his weight varies over the couse of day/week/month? Test his eyesight somehow?

But you're bio so I'd suggest.. ugh... something to do with analysing his excrement? See how long it takes a (harmless) chemical to go through, bacterial content, water/fibre ratio. Maybe grade him on the scale of awareness of each of his senses (iv'e seen this done somewhere)? See if you can test one of the reflex actions he shares with humans?

Keep thinking! Use that scientific imagination!

Do all snakes have salmonella?

Do all snakes have salmonella?

All reptiles and birds are CAPABLE of carrying the Salmonella virus. It is transmitted through direct contact with body fluids, this is why handwashing is so imperative after handling, just in case. However, with the invention of handsanitizer gel and better education and awareness, reptile associated Salmonella is very rare these days. :)

Holidays also on this date Monday, October 21, 2024...
