What does some people are all smoke and mirrors mean?

Smoke and mirrors is a metaphor for a deceptive, fraudulent or implausible explanation or description. The source of the name is based on magicians' illusions, where magicians make objects appear or disappear by extending or retracting mirrors, the movement of the mirror disguised by a distracting burst of smoke.

It might be clearer from a couple of modern day examples:

1. people who really beef up their CVs so that they look a hell of a lot better candidate for a job than they really are

2. a company really wants your business so they tell you yes, they can deliver/get something done at a much earlier date when they know full well that they can't -= that is, an attempt to fool a prospective client into thinking that one has capabilities beyond those that the company really has. They're magic! Oh yes? - the magician doesn't make the lady really disappear.

They just use trickery to make it seem they are magical!

Is philosophy just ’smoke & mirrors’?

Is philosophy just 'smoke & mirrors'?

These days, well...yah.

Helmet face shields/visors - dark smoke vs mirror?

Helmet face shields/visors - dark smoke vs mirror?

I utilize both, dark smoke is horrible at night time, mirror is much better, I also like mirror though during the day time even when riding straight into the sun. The dark smoke lens to me does not do to much and I think it is kind of worthless. The only problem with the mirror lens is the scratches. The scratches are not your normal scratches on a lens and make things look very weird. I do not know how to explain it but even the smallest scratch you will see with a mirror lens and your eyes seem to want to focus on it. I have also had a couple of friends that have had the same problem with mirrored lenses. For the best visibility though I would go with mirror, due to its ability to be able to be used both night and day, although I do have a clear lens just in case.
