World Mental Health Day (10 October) is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy.
Yes I know about it. I heard about this from a friend, who was informed by a Mental Health program she is involved in.
I have also been receiving emails from my University promoting awareness and advertising activities. They are pretty switched on about informing students of community and global events, which is great. I don't watch much T.V. so I can't tell you if there has been any ads about it.
I also haven't seen allot in the local paper which is a shame. I'm in a low income area and we do have allot of serious issues involving our mental health facilities. There are limited mental health worker who want to work in the local clinics because its a bit of a rough area. The hospital psychiatric wards in this area have a very bad reputation.
Actually...I just did a mini survey in my home asking who know about it...and no one did :-( Now I think about it, apart from my friend in the mental health program, I haven't heard anyone else talk about. So I guess it goes down the bottom on the list of peoples priories.
So you do make a good point, unless your personally involved in the mental health community how else will you get any awareness?
Oh and I'm in Melbourne, Australia.
World Mental Health Day Today?
The whole point about mental health issues is that they have become the new "unmentionable" illness. Decades ago cancer was talked about in whispers, because people were ashamed to be diagnosed with it - almost as if it was their own fault. Nowadays it is mental health issues. If the population were made to understand that the stats for mental health problems are the same as breast cancer 1 in 4 I am sure they would hopefully start questioning the way these issues are talked about. Too many people are brainwashed into thinking that talking about mental health merely signifies what used to be called the loonies. Yes, some people do have serious personality disorders, which can be extremely frightening for those around them, but OCD, Depression, Panic attacks, Agrophobia, and many more are condiions that can be treated. Seeing a counsellor or therapist is not an admission of failing, remember the three hardest words to say are "I need help". Lets not make things worse for those that are brave enough to ask. If today makes people talk about Mental Health then the object will have been achieved.
what is world health day?
April 7 of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. From its inception at the First Health Assembly in 1948 and since taking effect in 1950, the celebration has aimed to create awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization.
Over the past 50 years this has brought to light important health issues such as mental health, maternal and child care, and climate change. The celebration is marked by activities which extend beyond the day itself and serves as an opportunity to focus worldwide attention on these important aspects of global health.
