Who in the world is "Joe the Plumber"?

Who in the world is "Joe the Plumber"?

Joe is this guy from Ohio who thinks he shouldn't have to pay taxes. He claims that because he works 10-12 hours a day (who doesn't?) that he should be able to keep everything he earns or close to it. The Republican party are using him to further their agenda that has nothing to do with Joe. He is a plumber that wants to buy the business. He says if he has to pay taxes that he will have to lay people off. It's NOT true. All employees should be adding value to the company and if they are not then they shouldn't be hired in the first place or they should be laid off. The company won't last long if it has dead weight. I consider all employees that don't add value to be dead weight.

There is more to life than just money. There is your health. So you have a lot of money but say you have poor health and you have no friends because you've been a slave to work and say you live in a nice house, what kind of life is that? Lots of money but poor health and no friends? Is that what we should aspire to be?

AIG received a lot of taxpayer money and has been squandering it. $86,000 on a hunting trip in England. $440,000 on a spa trip in California. They canceled another $440,000 spa trip. I think Joe the plumber should have to pay too. He can afford it more easily than I can. I work very hard. I have my MBA that I earned while working full-time and taking care of a family. I also volunteer.

No one likes to pay taxes. We don't like to see our tax dollars wasted but if it makes our communities better and our nation stronger then how is that a waste?

Joe the plumber is just a lie. Obama's tax plan most likely will not affect Joe at all. But if it does then Joe is in the top 2% of Americans and he can afford it. He still will have a great life. If he buys a business then he should be able to take more time off, maybe not right away but soon. He is lucky. He'll be able to if he's smart about running a business. I should go into consulting. I know that I can help. I would be doing it for the people of this country. Businesses need to be run better.

How has Ancient Rome affected the world socially and economically throughout history?

How has Ancient Rome affected the world socially and economically throughout history?

One of the greatest civilizations in the ancient world, the Roman Empire had important contributions to the history of humanity that affected the social, economic and political progress of the peoples that the Romans conquered and governed. People all over the world have used their inventions and innovations long after the empire itself disintegrated, giving shape to the world as we know it today.

One of the contributions of the Roman civilization to world history was the spreading of Christianity. Due to the fact that the vast Roman territories were united under one government, Christianity spread throughout the Roman provinces as well as in the city of Rome. Before Christianity, the Romans imposed the belief in the existence of many gods who required sacrifices in order to grant protection against illness and poverty. When Christianity appeared, it was embraced by many people because it offered them the possibility of a personal relation with a single God. When the Roman Emperor Constantine declared himself a Christian in A.D. 312, he officially established Christianity as the religion of the Roman Empire.

The Romans established the republic as a form of democratic government in an attempt to limit the dictatorship of the monarchy. The republic had three branches: the consuls, who served as judges and army leaders; the senators were the most important people in the state acting as political advisers; and the assembly, made up of army members whose role was to approve or reject laws. The constitution of the Roman republic was referred to as "The Twelve Tables" because laws were divided into 12 sections. The rules were applied to all people alike, poor or rich, and they referred to property, marriage, family, crime, theft and inheritance.

The Roman buildings and aqueducts are considered great contributions to history civilization. The Romans built very large edifices, like the Colosseum -- that could hold around 50,000 people, and the Pantheon -- the largest dome of antiquity still standing. They were symbols of their power and ingenuity in mixing materials and creating masterpieces using new building techniques, like arches and columns for visual effect and structure enforcement. The aqueducts, with their impressive structures across rivers, included large networks of underground channels that supplied cities and valleys with running water that improved people's life and health. Later on, households benefited from indoor plumbing, an efficient sewer system and about a cubic meter of water per person every day.

Peoples that the Romans conquered have preserved the Latin language that Romans spoke. Latin developed in Romance languages (like Italian, French or Portuguese), but also influenced Germanic languages, like English, that still have a large amount of words of Latin origin. Many Latin idioms are still popular today and Latin terminology is used in the study and practice of sciences, medicine and law. Roman numerals (like I, II, III, etc.) were invented by the Romans and are still used in document numbering and on clocks. Roman art masterpieces -- sculptures of deities and busts of Roman emperors, paintings and many others -- have survived the dissolution of the Roman Empire and have taken their place in museums around the world.
