Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis?

It is a big deal in the case of the lawyer because of the vatiation of TB that he has. Normally TB is pretty easily controlled with antibiotics. It doesn't spread all that rapidly, and it grows pretty slowly, so it seldom becomes fatal. In his case, he has one of the very nasty versions that is resistant to most of the antibiotics in use. The only ones left are those reserved just for these cases, and they aren't always effective either. At the moment, this type TB occurs rarely outside of the few pockets in Russia and Asia, and has not spread much beyond that. In addition, this version grows a lot faster, and if you can't get rid of it with the antibiotics, removing that part of the lung is the only other option. That's something that hasn't been done in TB treatment in about 50 years. If this varient ever gets a good start outside the small areas, and into the general world population, you are looking at a catastophy that could make the plague look mild. At least the plague killed you in a matter of days, TB will take years. In the meantime, you continue to spread it around, to other unsuspecting people. The young, the elderly, and the immunocompromised will be the first to go. Know anyone who's got AIDS or had a transplant? Know anyone with heart trouble, or lung problems already? Because thats the primary population that will get it first and die. So yes, it was a big deal. This time we were lucky, because he isn't spewing the bacteria all the time, so the folks who shared his air are probably not in a lot of danger. But the point is, he knew he had it, and he didn't care who he exposed as long as he got to do what he wanted to do. Aside from his personal irresponsibility, though, it's a wakeup call for the entire world. This time we were lucky and it wasn't a really serious transmission risk. But next time we may not be so lucky. We need to have some system in place to prevent known carriers of serious and transmittable diseases from being able to spread it that far or that quickly. And we need to get people to take some personal responsibility not to do it as well. Think about it. Would you go to work and spew flu all over everyone? And that's a much less virulent disease. So is it any less responsible to expect a "well educated" person to use a bit of common sense either?

when is the World TB Day?

when is the World TB Day?

March 24th

Here's a quote from the World Health Organization Site:

"World Tuberculosis Day, held annually on 24 March, commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch presented his discovery of the TB bacillus to a group of doctors in Berlin. This year, World TB Day will focus on the efforts of frontline TB care providers and their crucial role in stopping TB."
