A day is set aside in April of every year on which to cherish special items that go back to a time when high quality and craftsmanship were most valued by a critical customers. It is a day on which everybody is motivated to review an age of creative ability that, for them, holds a special and classic appeal.

It depends on what "things" you're talking about, and what you consider to be the "olden days." I think that when people look at surviving historical items, they like to assume that everything was equally well built and long lasting. That's not necessarily the case. When I was in my 20's I salvaged and restored an old bureau that had been sitting in a barn since the Depression - I only did it because the wood looked nice, and everyone said I couldn't do it, and I knew I could. But as soon as it was done, I sold it, because it was a crummy piece of furniture, with a nice looking surface, but with a flimsy interior. There were always shoddy goods, even in the olden days, though more people had genuine cabinetmaking, mechanical and other skills.

By soaking it in water. Place it in a container and pour med hot water over it and let it soak. The starch will slowly start to melt. Repeat this process until all the starch has soften and separated from the lace. This may take a couple of days. When the water has cooled pour off the old water with the starch in it and put new water over the lace. Be careful with the lace. When the starch is gone from lace the water will be clean and clear of starch. Do not wring out the lace just place on a towel and shape and let dry. Congratulation on receiving this from your grandmother I know you will cherish it. I love old lace and i am a grandmother and almost a great one.
