Is working on a Coast Guard base like any other day job?

Is working on a Coast Guard base like any other day job?

No, active duty Coast Guard is the opposite of a day job. First, you don't get to pick your assignment (you ask). If you end up on a major cutter that is gone for months at a time, that would be the opposite of a day job, as you wouldn't be "home" (which wouldn't be where you live now) for that whole period. It'd be months between the times you walked in your front door. Even the folks that you're seeing who work on base, they stand duty every few days where they probably don't leave the base for 24 hours. Also, these same folks likely were on cutters for their last assignment, or will be on their next one.

100% day jobs do exist in the Coast Guard - they're federal civilian employees, but these are not the "exciting" patrol boat crews like you're talking about. Bad guys don't work 9-5, people need rescuing outside those hours too. Federal civilian jobs tend to be much more mundane.

Good luck!

Did you know that the Army can guarentee a job before you go to basic training? By all means, I am not trying to change your mind but at least consider looking into the other services.
