The British language is easily the most broadly used or spoken language on the planet, and it is lengthy good reputation for absorbing words, concepts and cultural influences from around the world provides it with an enormous vocabulary, only one which is filled with odd rules, spelling and behavior. English Language Day remembers the word what, eccentricities and all sorts of!
English is important because
1. It is THE most international language in the world
2. It allows for the best expression in writing, as we have so many words that convey so many shades of meaning. I think English probably the only language that needs a thesaurus; other languages just don't have them.
3. English borrows heaps of words from other languages, so it's actually a very diverse language
4. Because English is spoken so widely, so many great works of art have been produced by English speakers from all the countries where it is spoken.
I think you should read "Mother Tongue" by Bill Bryson. In particular, this quote could be useful for your speech: "More than 300 million people in the world speak English and the rest, it sometimes seems, try to"
Good luck for your speech!

Is the Internet killing the English language?
The English language as known to Shakespeare no longer exists and has long been replaced by the English as we know it today. Language is culture-specific, it mirrors the age in which it is used .So there must be something in the present-day culture that drives youngsters to such blatant abuse of a well-preserved language, perhaps they find the "Kewl" element missing in regular well-structured language.
Internet cannot be blamed for that, technology has always had its own pros and cons. Perhaps the "instant" nature of all things(communication, frienship, relationship etc.) in this age leaves people with little patience which reflects in the language. Yes it will change in form, but language cannot be killed as long as humans have enough to express.
