Wednesday, May 22, 2024 is Harvey Milk Day 2024. Harvey Milk Day is organized by the Harvey Milk Foundation and celebrated each year held May 22 in memory of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist assassinated in 1978.

I believe they started having a Harvey Milk day in San Francisco. There was talk of it at least, but since I don't live in that particular city, I can't be sure.

I know in Cali we have Caesar Chavez day because of his accomplishments in fighting for protections for our migrant farm workers. So why not a Harvey Milk day? I think all heroes should be honored, in all honesty, and in this day and age our heroes don't generally come clad in leather armor with a battle axe and a sword. Then again, honoring those who fight selflessly and with honor *is* a major part of my faith and culture. ☺

When will we see a Harvey Milk Day?

As far as I know of, California's the only state that's planning to observe Harvey Milk Day as an official day of recognition -- and even then, it won't be a formal holiday.

But I suspect that, in time, Harvey Milk Day will become a national holiday as more and more people recognize the significance of his contributions to the state of California, gay rights, and human rights overall. It took a long time for our federal and state governments to recognize the significance of Martin Luther King's civil rights contributions enough to observe his birthday (or the Monday closest to his birthday) as a major holiday. But now we've all been doing that for years. If the same thing doesn't happen with Harvey Milk Day in my lifetime, I'll eat my computer mouse!

Should there be a Harvey Milk Day?

No.

Why? Because his last name was Milk. Seriously, if there was a Harvey Milk Day, people would probably assume that it was a day that you were required to drink a gallon of milk!
