Holocaust Remembrance Day 2021 is on Wednesday, April 7, 2021: Holocaust Remembrance?
Wednesday, April 7, 2021 is Holocaust Remembrance Day 2021. Holocaust Memorial Day or Holocaust Remembrance Day may refer to a number of world-wide commemorations of the Holocaust taking place during World War II.
Holocaust Memorial Day or Holocaust Remembrance Day may refer to a number of world-wide commemorations of the Holocaust taking place during World War II.
Remembrance Day first began to be observed in 1951 and the idea at that time was to also commemorate the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (the choice of date was inspired by the uprising). Yom HaShoah is the Hebrew name for Remembrance Day.
However, it was always meant to be observed according to the Hebrew Calendar - which differs from the Roman Calendar (it is a lunar-solar calendar so the 'Roman' date of Remembrance Day is different from year to year).
Initially it was supposed to be observed on the 14th of Nisan (according to the Hebrew calendar) but it was moved to the 27th of Nisan because the 14th is the day immediately before Passover.
But despite this calendar juggling, you're essentially correct. The anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is what inspired the choice of the date.
Do we need a Holocaust Remembrance Day?
Thanks Shebs for a great answer.
In my homeland of Austria the "Holocaust" is what the founders of America did to the native Indians there.
1. Stole their land
2. Murdered them if they resisted.
3. Sent them to camps.
4. Starved them
5. Totally wiped out entire nations of people.
6. Slaughtered for fun the animals they existed on.
In return they got the politically correct name "Native Americans"
Do you wonder why there are no remembrance days for our holocaust to the indigenous persons of this country?
Too ashamed I'm sure.
What do people do for "Holocaust Remembrance" day?
Very noble gesture. I was genuinely not aware it was Holocaust Remembrance Day, but I did watch "Schindler's List" last week. People criticize the movie simply because it was made by a big name director who normally does totally different projects. However, genuine survivors of The Holocaust believed the movie to be worthwhile
