I’m going sailing on Lake Superior for 3 days?

Can't say for sure about MEMORIIAL DAY weekend - but if you were going today, you would want a warm layers, a heavy jacket, heavy rain gear, plenty of chewable Meclizine for sea-sickness, and your safety harness and/or PFD if not provided by the vessel owner.

Here is today's Marine Forecast for Lake Superior: :

"Surface water temperatures are 35° and 36°. A Gale Warning remains in effect from 8 PM this evening to 8 am EDT Sunday.

Wind and waves during the gale warning: expect sustained winds of

up to 28 knots from the north... with gusts up to 35 knots. The

largest expected significant waves will be 10 feet with a maximum

wave height of up to 14 feet possible.

Maximum winds are expected around 2 am EDT Sunday

with the largest waves expected around 4 am EDT Sunday."

Unless it really really warms up - with surface water temperatures still at 35° you can bet it will still be very cold on the water Memorial Day weekend - you won't be going swimming for sure.

Here is a link to check on the marine weather on areas of Lake Superior:

I would keep an eye on the weather. . . as that will make all the difference in the world in what you need to take. . . Don't know why in the world you would need a GPS - the rest is good common sense. ie" soft sole shoes, boat shoes or sneakers, hat, sunglasses, camera, sun lotion, and appropriate clothes for the weather.

* If you are going to be near the Edumund Fitzgerald Museum - it's worth a visit!

If this for the Navy's Memorial Day Father & Son day cruise - your son will get a list of what you can and can not bring. . .

Lake Superior? Lake Heron? Help!!!!?

Lake Superior? Lake Heron? Help!!!!?

Superior's waves can get very big. It's a huge lake as I'm sure you know, and because it's oriented east-west the wind is parallel to the direction of the lake, allowing for bigger waves.

The problem with Superior is that the water is very, very cold all year, and it doesn't have the nice sandy beaches you get in southern Ontario - it's more along the lines of rock dropping straight off into water, with small pebbly beaches where the current is sheltered, and lots of random granite boulders. It's not really safe to swim in heavy surf in those conditions.

How are the bugs on Lake Superior?

How are the bugs on Lake Superior?

In June and early July it can be buggy and you need to pick your days to be in (or get out of) the woods. When the air is dry and there is a little breeze, it is lovely. With humidity and still air the bugs chase you out of the woods and there are usually five or six days in June and July when the best thing to do is accept the inevitable and stay indoors. I use insect repellent sparingly as I don't think it is good for my health and find a better strategy is just to avoid any strong scents. People who work in the woods use unscented soap and shampoo and skip shaving lotion (perfume, for the women). When you do that you'll be surprised how little the bugs bother you. By August the bugs are mostly gone and after Labor Day comes the spectacular color and dramatic weather of a Michigan fall.
