Lighthouse Day

If you are the captain of the sea-faring ship and sometimes travel through heavy fog (or regularly pull the evening change), you’ll already without doubt be considered a huge fan of Lighthouse Day. For the less maritime visitors, this one’s about shining large, vibrant lights from peninsulas to assist ships, motorboats and mariners understand. Good ole’ lighthouses, right?

Are lighthouses still around these days?

Australia has many working automated lighthouses, and at least 2 manned ones ! People sign up for a 12 month to 2 year stretch, and get to live on their own deserted island. Unfortunately, the islands are not in the tropics, so mostly it's cold, wet and windy. Yet they still get takers. I think they only take married couples.

if GOD is a LIGHTHOUSE, would we NEED him during the DAY?

if GOD is a LIGHTHOUSE, would we NEED him during the DAY?

First, we must see the simile of the words being used. God is a lighthouse. Lighthouse is a guiding light that leads sailors to safe venture while sailing through the night.

day-symbolizes a bright new life, free of worries and cumbersome burdens

night-symbolizes a dark life, full of perils, predicaments, and worries

God-is all-knowing divine being, Omniscient, and Omnipotent

If God is a lighthouse, we most need him to go with us through all our struggles in life as our guiding light to lead us safe and victor to all life oddballs and sufferings. But God as a lighthouse, stands still in the center, all-knowing and all-seeing , even through the day when we almost think we don't need Him. He is standing tall like a lighthouse waiting for our call even if everything is running smoothly in our quest for our so-called life.

History of bodie lighthouse?

History of bodie lighthouse?

The black and white horizontal striped Bodie Island Lighthouse, off NC 12 between Nags Head and Oregon Inlet is the third lighthouse of that name to stand guard over this stretch of coastline. The first Bodie Island lighthouse underwent construction in 1847, but due to poor design and engineering, the tower ended up being a foot taller on one side than the other. Instead of attempting to salvage the 54-foot structure, plans were made for a second Bodie Island Lighthouse.

This second tower was begun in 1859 and upon completion, the white brick lighthouse stood almost 90 feet was fitted with a 3rd order Fresnel lens that cast a beam that could be seen for 15 miles. This lighthouse met its fate during the Civil War. Retreating Confederate troops feared that the advancing Union Army would use the Bodie Island Lighthouse as a lookout and consequently destroyed it.

Unlike its predecessors, the present day Bodie Island Lighthouse was built on the north side of Oregon Inlet. The 156-foot sentinel was placed in service in October 1872. It was automated in 1954. The 1st order Fresnel lens gives two flashes every 22 seconds that can be seen for 19 miles. The tower is not open for climbing. There is a visitor center and gift shop in the former double keeper's quarters as well as exhibits that tell the history of the lighthouse. The grounds are also a good place for bird watching.

all and slim, with bold black alternating with stark white circular stripes the 156-foot Bodie Island Lighthouse sits not on an island at all; it is located on the soundside of Highway 12, between Nags Head and Oregon Inlet. It was completed in 1872, the third lighthouse built in this area.

For over 200 years, many a vessel encountered the huge waves, strong currents and high winds offshore near Bodie Island, and many met their fate along that stretch of the Atlantic.

The lighthouse is not open to the public, but a visitor center in an old keeper's quarters features exhibits. Nearby marshes offer a self-guided nature trail.
