American Enterprise Day

November 15th marked the celebration of American Enterprise Day. FBLA recognizes American Enterprise Day as a day to celebrate our free enterprise system. This day is a focus on our rights to pursue whatever career we desire, and our right to entrepreneurship and free enterprise itself. President Jimmy Carter first proclaimed American Enterprise Day in the late 1970’s. This eventually developed into an FBLA-PBL program called “Getting Involved,” an awareness program under a grant from the Chevron Corporation. That made it for three reasons: To get local chapter members involved in their business community, placing particular emphasis on the free enterprise system, and to provide opportunities for members of the lo

A Data Bank Report was also published featuring the success stories of all chapters surveyed. The proclamation will be available on the state web-site. Some examples are hanging posters around town, make a radio announcement, or make an article for a news paper. American Enterprise day is a important day for businesses and our country as a whole.

“Getting Involved’s” first component, an economic education packet, was introduced in 1982 following research into the needs of local chapters. Chapters do a variety of projects to promote American Enterprise Day. Hopefully, every chapter celebrated American Enterprise Day by getting involved in their community and learning about the free enterprise system that makes our nation great.

The officers enjoyed their visit with the Governor and are pleased with what they accomplished. A film and a free enterprise poster were added in July 1983. Lastly, it is a way for many young students to get involved in their local Future Business Leaders of America group. cal business community to become involved in the process of educating tomorrow’s business leaders, and to generate activities which promote American enterprise on November 15 and throughout the school year. Selected chapters were asked to share their success stories at seminars presented during the 1983 and 1984 FBLA-PBL National Leadership Conferences. They are also anxious to educate the community on the importance of the American Enterprise system.

CARTER'S PROCLAMATION:

Proclamation 4778 - American Enterprise Day, 1980

August 8th, 1980

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

The American free enterprise system, the cornerstone of our Nation's economy, has endured and flourished for more than 200 years. It provides us with one of the highest standards of living in the world, and guarantees freedom of choice in a way that sets us apart among nations.

It is a system that depends upon and rewards initiative and innovation, a system that offers opportunities to Americans from all walks of life, a system whose benefits accrue to each of us.

Today, our free enterprise system is buffeted by changes both at home and abroad. Inflation, the energy crisis, growing competition in world markets—all challenge our resourcefulness. To preserve the health of our system and our position in the international economy, we must work together to increase productivity by developing and implementing new techniques for the more effective use of raw materials, energy, machines, and our own labor. In the process, we will reaffirm our confidence in the American future.

In recognition of the importance of our enterprise system, the Congress in Senate Joint Resolution 109 has requested the proclamation of October 3, 1980, as American Enterprise Day.

Now, THEREFORE, I, JIMMY CARTER, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 3, 1980, as American Enterprise Day, and I urge business, labor, agricultural, educational, professional, consumer and civic groups, as well as the people of the United States generally, to observe American Enterprise Day with appropriate activities that promote appreciation of the American free enterprise system and its benefits.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of August, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fifth.

JIMMY CARTER
