Pig In A Blanket Day

Pig Inside A Blanket Day encourages the intake of ‘pigs in blankets’ – small pork sausages (or chipolatas) covered with sausage or pastry, and cooked until crispy. Chinese and eastern types more carefully resemble small sausage comes. To have an alternative method of honoring Pig In A Blanket Day, you may consider wrapping your farm creatures in layers of protective fabric – whichever you want.

My guinea pig is on her 65th day of pregnancy.. WHEN?!?

The gestation of a guinea pig is 63-74 days so your guinea pig will soon have those babies. If she has had a second mating, she may be due a little later. Your guinea pig sounds very close but some animals are deceptive.

Other signs of labor you should look for in guinea pigs are:

1: She will get a gap between her hip bones at the base of the spinal cord. You will be able to feel this with your fingers. This usually happens 24 hours before the birth, as her pelvis widens. To check this, have her on the table facing you, run your fingers down her spine and when you get to the end of the spinal cord, gently feel for two bones. The gap between them will slowly get bigger before the birth. Her pelvic bones usually widen to about 3.5 cm.

2: She will lick her genital area when the birth is near.

3: She usually won't eat for 24 hours before the birth (however, every guinea pig is different).

4: She may drink a greater amount of water.

5: She will lie down and rest more often or seem restless or quite uncomfortable.

6: She may lie on her side and start to have labored breathing.

7: When she is very close, she will stunt to hunch up every now and again, (this is the contractions).

8: Guinea pigs make a grunt noise before they go into labor but sometimes the guinea pig grunts, it means the first baby has arrived.

Usually guinea pigs give birth at night or in early morning, but my guinea pig gave birth right in the middle of the day, so every guinea pig is different.

If your are lucky to witness the birth, then just be calm and very quiet, most guinea pigs deliver normally and mother their babies without any help from human activity.

Some sows refuse to clean their babies so if the mother has not cleaned the sack from the babies, you must act quickly and do this ASAP. Pinch the sack at the babies nose so it can breath. Then use a damp cloth to clean the babies and then return them to their mother. If something is wrong with one of the babies, the mother will usually eat or kill it.

Normal labor should be short and sweet. The whole process to first contractions to the last baby can be as short as fifteen minutes and up to forty, depending on how many she has. There should be little or no blood, especially before the babies have been produced. If you see your sow bleeding, more then a tablespoon, dripping blood, or many pieces of blood in the bedding with no babies, then it would be best to take the guinea pig to the vet. Most likely the babies are too big to come out, or one has punctured the uterus and need an emergency cesarean.

Don't feed her lettuce or cabbage, as they have little to no nutritional value and can cause gas, bloat and/ diarrhea in the gastric stomach and anal glands.

Just keep an eye on her.

I hope I helped.

Good luck.

How long will it take my guinea pig to warm up to me?

How long will it take my guinea pig to warm up to me?

Ok well first of all, this time of the guinea pig's life is the most important for you to earn trust! It is EXTREMELY hard when they are over a year old!

The moment I got my 2wk old guinea pig, I held it up to me and cuddled it for 3 hours, feeding it carrots from time to time. It was a 3 hour drive home and i put it in the box for a little while every hour in case it had to go to the bathroom, but anyways, now, that guinea pig LOVES being held and it actually walks on my hand when i put my hand in the cage to get it out.

If you want your guinea pig to be like that, you have to show it that you love it and that you don't want to hurt it. You should cuddle with it for numerous hours of the day, giving it little breaks, of course, and feeding it treats only when it is calm while you hold it.

To answer your questions directly, here:

1. Yes it is normal, fear is most definitely normal.

2. Yes! Affection, affection, affection! Give as much of it as possible! The more you hold and feed it by hand, the more it will love you and come to see that you are gentle.

3. It may be he is afraid of his surroundings. My guinea pigs get scared whenever i put them in a large room and they come running back to me.

4. Well there is potty training kits at pet stores, i would suggest trying that first and if that doesnt work, well I am sorry to disappoint but I have no idea! I'd like to potty train mine but ATM i don't have enough money to spare.

So the main keys to getting your guinea pig love and get comfortable with you are the following:

1. Cuddle with it several hours a day.

2. While cuddling, provide treats for it, and hand-feed them to the piggy.

3. Put out a little playpen for it and cover the floor with some towels and let it run around in there freely. (What i do is just guinea-pig-proof my room and lay on the floor and let them run around free and when they approach me i just look at them and let them run close to me, showing them that I don't want to hurt them)

4. And heres one I didn't mention before, you should put your hand in the cage and just hum a soft tune, luring them to your hand, and at first, just keep your hand still, then over a little period of time, you can put a finger in there, and when they come over, try to pet their nose slowly and gently with your finger, soon you should be able to stick your hand in there and pet them with your whole hand without them fearing :)

Sorry it's so long of an answer! I hope I helped!

EDIT -

When they purr while your petting them, they like it, if they squeak, it means they are afraid and they think that you will hurt them.

Also, you have to say their name every single time you say it, in the EXACT SAME WAY. otherwise they wont learn it. The way i taught mine, was I would say "Paprika!" (my guinea pig's name) in a very high pitched tone and whenever she squeaked, i would give her a carrot or a piece of lettuce. Also, from caring for her nicely like I do, every time I walk in my room, she squeaks and runs up to the door of the cage and stands on her hind legs, putting her two front feet on the cage door, and when i open the door she runs out of the cage and to me happily. This is all the result of me constantly petting and hand-feeding her :) it may take a bit of time. I have owned her for almost two years.

Guinea Pigs???????????

Guinea Pigs???????????

Guinea pigs make wonderful pets and you will discover that your piggy is a faithful companion. I have raised longhaired guinea pigs for quite awhile. Here are my best recommendations for you and they work no matter if your piggy has long hair, short hair or no hair at all:

1. The only SAFE pellet for guinea pigs is Oxbow Cavy Cuisine. It's good for all ages. Avoid the other Oxbow cavy mix because it is made from alfalfa and it's not good for babies, despite what the label says. Alfalfa is the leading cause of bladder stones. Babies do fine on the Cavy Cuisine.

2. Have lots of fresh grass hay available at all times. Cut the hay into shorter lengths with a pair of scissors if it is really long hay. Your guinea pig will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

3. A good breakfast is leaf lettuce and cucumber. Cucumber is the most important vegetable for guinea pigs because it contains vitamins, minerals, and a LOT of water. You can repeat the breakfast at supper time. In between, your piggy will enjoy an afternoon snack. Here's some favorites:

fresh basil, chopped tomato, yellow bell pepper, parsley, brocolli, blueberries, banana, carrots. You can give a piece of apple once week, never more than that. Apples contain malic acid which could cause sores on the piggy's mouth if he/she eats it everyday.

4. salt block

5. fresh water - change it every other day if it's in a bottle or twice every day if it's in a small bowl.

6. vitamin C - I use the Oxbow tablets. At first, I had to put a tablet in the piggy's mouth and gently cup it with my hand because he kept spitting it out. Now, he thinks it's candy and he loves it. All my guinea pigs eat the tablets now. You can also put drops in the water, but then you never know how much vitamin your piggy is getting. Do not use the powder. Guinea pigs hate it.

7. Toys - wadded up paper coffee filters (the paper is safe). Fill a cardboard tube with hay. Make a slit lengthwise along the entire tube so piggy can't get his head stuck. Guinea pigs like to play tug-of-war, but let the piggy win. Otherwise, he will get discouraged.

8. A big cage with a pigloo. I use fleece blankets for bedding, which are absorbent and washable. But you can put newspapers on the bottom of the cage and spread pine shavings on top of the paper. Contrary to what many piggy owners claim, pine shavings are SAFE!!! Do not, however, use cedar or hardwood shavings.

9. Lots of attention!!! Your piggy will need exercise, so turn him/her loose every day for at least 2 hours. The longer the better. Play with your piggy gently. If you have other pets, make sure your guinea pig is in a room with the door shut so the other pets can't harm him/her. NEVER trust a dog, ferret, cat, or large parrot with a guinea pig.

10. Be very careful when you carry your guinea pig around and NEVER put him/her on a table or a chair. A fall on the floor could break the neck, back, or legs.

11. A piece of dried whole grain bread a couple times a week makes a good snack.

12. Be gentle. Guinea pigs love soft music like Enya, Switched-on Bach, and some even like techno! The Four Seasons classical piece by Vivalde is another favorite.

13. When guinea pigs are happy, they purr. If they jump up and down, it's called "popcorning" and it means your piggy is delighted.

14. If a guinea pig refuses to eat, TAKE IT TO THE VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY!!! Guinea pigs do not show illness until they are very sick. Hours can make the difference between life and death, so do not hesitate to rush your guinea pig to the veterinarian.

15. It's a good idea to give your guinea pig parasite medicine a couple times a year. I use Stronghold, which I apply by parting the piggy's hair just above his shoulders rub into the skin. If you feed fresh grass or dandylions, you should give the medicine every 2 months.

16. Do not put your guinea pig's cage in a conservatory, glassed-in porch,or in direct sunlight. The piggy will get too warm and could die of heat stroke. Likewise, don't put him outside on cold days. Guinea pigs like a regular temperature - if you are comfortable in a t-shirt, then your piggy is comfortable.
