Tangible Karma Day

The objective of Tangible Karma Day is perfect for people honoring the big event to p-clutter their lives and to offer to individuals that have been in need. Tangible Karma is really a company founded by Amber Nicole Dilger in 2005 and her idea ended up being to recycle and reuse. You can go to the website to give goods and track how they are utilised to assist others. Out of this company came the muse for Tangible Karma Day.You will find a number of ways that individuals can celebrate Tangible Karma Day. One of the ways is perfect for people or groups to invest an hour or so of the day p-cluttering their lives and providing any undesirable products to individuals in need of assistance. Similarly, you are able to invite people to your house and collect products to offer to charitable organisation with each other. An alternative choice would be to volunteer in a shelter to assist individuals in need of assistance for just one day.

What do you think of reputation/karma systems on forums?

It's hard to say. Like you mentioned, there are good things and bad things about a voting system.

First, some examples of website that do voting:

www.stackoverflow.com -- a computer programming website that allows users to vote up and down solutions to questions

www.reddit.com -- just a bunch of posts to other internet links. Users upvote or downvote things to express their like or dislike of a post.

To an extent, Y! Answers has a voting system, wherein each answer can be thumbed up or thumbed down. An answer that has multiple thumbs down is automatically hidden from view.

Youtube also has a thumb up thumb down system for its videos and comments.

So voting can definitely work. However, there probably needs to be safeguards against abuse. The simplest abuse I can think of is that people will create multiple accounts to upvote themselves or downvote others. Y! Answers prevents this by requiring level 2 (250 points) before getting voting privileges. I know some other websites obfuscate the real value and/or delay the effects of voting in an effort to stop abuse. You can also give veteran users "more votes" so that trusted members have more say and influence.

The good things are that voting can create positive feedback loops where helpful posts get thumbs up and in turn sparks goodwill among forum members. And since reputation has little tangible effects, the motivation for abusing the system isn't too high. It's pretty pointless so most people won't bother.

The bad news is that sometimes people vote up or down based on ridiculous things like "I disagree with the poster's opinion" or "I don't like his avatar" or whatever. It's not really a replacement for forum moderation, which I suppose will always be needed.

Is Atheism a Discouraging and Hopeless Worldview?

Is Atheism a Discouraging and Hopeless Worldview?

I've been agnostic/atheist for 40 years now, and I've been through rough spots. However, I am still curious on what the next day will bring, I have never contemplated suicide because of ennui. I find life interesting, although it's often unpleasant.

Yes, chemicals control our moods, but these chemicals are created because of things that happen around us. Endorphins get secreted because we choose to exercise or dance or whatever. It works both ways. Reality around us shapes our feelings and thus our thoughts, but our feelings and thoughts get translated into reality. We can choose to cultivate negativity, attracting to ourselves the corresponding quality of energy (stupid choice)

When you look at the science behind everything, you shouldn't forget to include the energy bodies, the aura, the energy centres... and the power of thought forms. As a practitioner of energy healing I've been able to touch all this stuff and yes, any manipulation of energy does have tangible results - look it up a bit before dimissing it. I've seen energy healing work on babies and animals and plants, and even on my laptop.

It helps to think of all matter, from rocks to human beings to whatever, as positioned in a scale of different vibration. Matter can be more dense, solid, with very minimum awareness (e.g. rocks) and goes on to more subtlety, to plants, animals, including humans, and then other beings of a higher vibrational level and subtler energy which possibly exist but we know not much of. In this "continuum" view, we are all made of the same matter, but of different quality and degree, and we all have something one might call "soul" or "consciousness" or whatever.

Even within the human species, some people are nearer to the lower animals and some are nearer to higher beings. We can choose to develop ourselves and evolve.

We do have an amount of freedom regarding what exactly we allow into our lives. This comes not from our physical body but from our energy body, and what spiritual people might call soul (yes, you can be spiritual without being religious, and without believing in any god concept).

My thought is that maybe the Hindu/Buddhist concept of karma and reincarnation makes some sense. This theory says that we evolve according to our actions and thoughts. This evolving takes several lifetimes, so the immortal part of us becomes reincarnated again and again in order to learn the lessons that will help achieve this. We are free, however, to turn a blind eye and refuse to learn these lessons, repeating the same mistakes over and over again. It's our choice.

In this view - think about it! - things are not random. We don't meet people, we don't happen to be born in a certain family and country, with no reason. There is a reason. There are no coincidences. And every little action counts, it has an effect (this is also what science says). So if you are attracted to a certain person, and you fall in love, yes, the chemicals get flowing, the hormones make it more urgent or whatever, but on a higher, energy level, it is because this person has the kind of energy which matches your own needs, and your higher self believes that this person will help you on your evolving path, and is precious and necessary. Even if he/she will break your heart. The hormones which make you crazy with desire are just the means to help with the main goal, which is to grow and learn and become wise. If the heartbreak teaches you nothing about yourself and the world, if you don't become wiser, don't worry! Another person will come who will break your heart even worse. Until you finally get it. The universe has infinite patience, and time is no issue, so the lesson will present itself again and again, every time you fail to pass the exam. The beauty of it is that you, yourself, unconsciously present yourself with these lessons, not some other person or being. It's you who wants to evolve, but the mind is recalcitrant and tries to become the master, hindering you on your purpose.

I hope this made some sense. I realise that you're coming from a different place, and you probably haven't come across this sort of stuff before - and it's not something that can be analyzed more within the short space available here.

Bottom line: I don't care if it's the chemicals, but when I see and smell a homemade apple pie, or hold my children in my arms, I feel a rush of happiness that makes my day. If these chemicals help me be happier, it's a good thing.

@All hat: Well said, but what's the point of repeating what I already wrote?

Ok, so I just read this article ’Porn made for women, by women’ but I don’t fully understand?

Ok, so I just read this article 'Porn made for women, by women' but I don't fully understand?

Women tend to like the kinkier more unusual porn rather than the straight ‘Wham bang thank you mam’ porn that men are supposed to enjoy. This applies across the sexes and across national boundaries. US men are said to like the more physical side, facial slapping and butt slapping ( whatever that’s about?), false plastic boobies and facial perfection etc . British men are supposed to like to be more susceptible to the ‘natural look’ ‘girl next door’ sort of look without all the slapping. Within each of these, there is a very broad church of all sorts of variety for men and women.

You’ve nearly all probably disagreed with my first line. I just threw that in there to make my point. My point is that it’s horses for courses. The sooner that some women stop trying to stereotype all women and telling them what to think with a hangover from Victorian values the better. The sooner they stop stereotyping men the better too. They have a product to sell and I can’t blame them for telling women what to think. If I was a pornographer, I’d be telling people to buy my porn too. If they’re able to be totally honest, all people have all sorts of different tastes, I don’t think it matters whether they’re men or women.

Karma Chameleon - I’d prefer the more tender, sensual and erotic, sometimes not. It depends upon how I feel at the time. I’m human, I have different moods and feelings at different times. Women range from the ‘tender, sensual and erotic’ to what I would call downright psycho. Women fill all of that broad spectrum. Everyone’s different. ‘We are more aroused mentally than purely visually’, I suppose that must explain teenage girls and their fanatical screaming at pop-stars or even David Beckham in his Y-fronts. I’ve yet to see teenage boys behave like that.
