What happened to thomas paine after "common sense"?

Thomas Paine's "American Crisis" was instrumental in rallying the demoralized American troops, and those whose enlistments were to expire in days, to remain and to cross the Delaware on Christmas with Washington. That resulted in their first victory, which raised morale and speared them on to the Battle of Princeton, which was another victory. As a result, 8.00 men enlisted. This pamphlet was so popular that as a percentage of the population, it was read by or read to more people than today watch the Super Bowl.

(He wrote a total of 13 works entitled "American crisis".) For his works, see:

At war's end, the Congress gave Thomas Paine a farm in New Rochelle, New York, for services rendered. (Congress had no money; this was a big honor to get.)

Later, Paine greatly influenced the French Revolution. He wrote the Rights of Man (1791), a guide to Enlightenment ideas. Despite not speaking French, he was elected to the French National Convention in 1792. The Girondists regarded him as an ally, so, the Montagnards, especially Robespierre, regarded him as an enemy. In December of 1793, he was arrested and imprisoned in Paris, for not endorsing the execution of Louis XVI. During his imprisonment, he wrote and distributed the first part of what was to become his most famous work at the time, the anti-church text, The Age of Reason (1794-96), for which he became notorious.. He was freed in 1794 (narrowly escaping execution) thanks to the efforts of James Monroe, then U.S. Minister to France. Paine remained in France during the early Napoleonic era, but condemned Napoleon's dictatorship, calling him "the completest charlatan that ever existed". He also wrote the pamphlet Agrarian Justice (1795), discussing the origins of property, and introduced the concept of a guaranteed minimum income.

In 1802 he returned to America where he died in 1809.

His works are still influential today, having gained the respect of Lincoln, Edison and Barack Obama, who quoted him in his inaugural address. See:

Question about Puritans and Thomas Paine?

Question about Puritans and Thomas Paine?

Thomas Paine was a propagandist and voice of the common man. His whole life was about politics and political influence.

Initially the Puritans were expressed their political and social opinions quite forcefully, even to the point of straining the social constraints of a rigid monarchical English society. In the early 1600's the Puritans rose up in the English Parliament against the king. Whilst many were religious the movement at that time was not.

It was when they emigrated to America that the religious took over and turned it into a religious belief.

So in the early days both Thomas Paine and the puritans were of similar ideas but upon arrival in america they diverged and would be at odds to each other!

who would you say is similar to Thomas Paine in present day?

Thomas Paine was a writer who used his platform to stir up trouble and unrest against the status quo. He used the most popular medium of the time (Books and pamphlets) to become a thorn in the side of royalty and advance his ideas. So who is most like him -- Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Although a case could be made for Michael Moore and Rush Limbaugh.
