Moon fasting, 11th day etc.? Hinduism..?

Hello,

(I) 11 moon day fast is called "Ekadashi vrat" in Sanskrit.

It is a very common fast in India.

The God believers as well as God in the form of Krishna/ Vishnu believers observe this fast.

Hindus believe that it is very beneficial for health as well as spiritual purpose.

It is a 24 hour fast.

Some of my friends observe Ekadashi vrat.

And, yes, it is beneficial.

___

Rules:

Wake up early in the morning. Take bath and offer prayers.

(1) One should not eat any cereals like rice, pulses, wheat, gram etc. and salt.

(2) If possible, one should stay on water. Drinking luke warm water or lemon-sugar water is very good as it cleanses the hidden undigested food in the body.

(3) If one feels hungry, then one can take milk or fruit.

(4) One should think that he/she is keeping this vrat to please God and to progress further in their devotion to God.

(5) One should observe self-control.

(6) One should do more of maun-japa (repeating the name of God in mind) in the day time.

Here is a detail article by Swami Krishnananda, he has explained in full detail the significance, worth to read it:

Amavasya, also Karutha Vavu, Amavas or Amavasi or Ammavasai, is the no moon day in a Hindu Calendar.

Amavasya Vrat is observed for the welfare of dead ancestors, parents and other relatives.

People observing fast on the day only take a single meal.

It is believed that by observing the vrat family will attain peace and prosperity with the blessings of ancestors.

The popular belief is that Pitrus (dead ancestors) receive the light of the moon on Amavasya night. Therefore the day is ideal for performing Shradh, Tarpan and Tila Tarpan. Bathing in holy rivers and performing the rituals is highly meritorious.

The rituals on Amavasya day is dedicated to all dead people in the family.

When Amavasya falls on Monday it is known as Somavara Amavasi and Hindus should perform vrat, holy bath and Daan (charity). Devotees also should do pradakshina (going around) of Peepal Tree for 108 times on the Somvar Amavasi day.

The single meal on Amavasya day is usually taken after sunset.

The fast should be performed when Amavasya Tithi is there during sunset.

The rituals should be performed only when Amavasya Tithi is there during the morning hours.

What is known as "May Day"?Is this celebrated in the may month?

What is known as "May Day"?Is this celebrated in the may month?

First version.

The origin of the May Day as a day for celebration dates back to the days, even before the birth of Christ. And like many ancient festivals it too has a Pagan connection.

For the Druids of the British Isles, May 1 was the second most important holiday of the year. Because, it was when the festival of Beltane held. It was thought that the day divides the year into half. The other half was to be ended with the Samhain on November 1. Those days the May Day custom was the setting of new fire. It was one of those ancient New Year rites performed throughout the world. And the fire itself was thought to lend life to the burgeoning springtime sun. Cattle were driven through the fire to purify them. Men, with their sweethearts, passed through the smoke for seeing good luck.

Second version:

International Workers' Day (a name used interchangeably with May Day) is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labour movement.

International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886, when Chicago police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight hour day, killing a dozen demonstrators. In 1889, the first congress of the Second International, meeting in Paris for the centennial of the French Revolution and the Exposition Universelle, following a proposal by Raymond Lavigne, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests. These were so successful that May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International's second congress in 1891. The May Day Riots of 1894 and May Day Riots of 1919 occurred subsequently. In 1904, the International Socialist Conference meeting in Amsterdam called on "all Social Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on May First for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace." As the most effective way of demonstrating was by striking, the congress made it "mandatory upon the proletarian organizations of all countries to stop work on May 1, wherever it is possible without injury to the workers."

May Day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist, and anarchist groups. In some circles, bonfires are lit in commemoration of the Haymarket martyrs, usually right as the first day of May begins[1]. It has also seen right-wing massacres of participants as in the Taksim Square massacre of 1977 in Turkey.

Due to its status as a celebration of the efforts of workers and the socialist movement, May Day is an important official holiday in Communist countries such as the People's Republic of China, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union. May Day celebrations typically feature elaborate popular and military parades in these countries.

In countries other than the United States and Canada, resident working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday and their efforts largely succeeded. For this reason, in most of the world today, May Day is marked by massive street rallies led by workers, their trade unions, anarchists and various communist and socialist parties.

In the United States, however, the official Federal holiday for the "working man" is Labor Day in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor organized the first parade in New York City. The first Labor Day celebration was held on September 5, 1882, and was organized by the Knights of Labor. The Knights began holding it every year and called for it to be a national holiday, but this was opposed by other labor unions who wanted it held on May Day (as it is everywhere else in the world). After the Haymarket Square riot in May, 1886, President Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the riots. Thus he moved in 1887 to support the Labor Day that the Knights supported.
