Tell me about it, Staten. I was at the drive thru today and I had a big order of drinks. They didn't hear a single one and made me repeat the whole order.

AND YES, FOR ONCE, YOU ARE RIGHT!

Working at Sonic drive thru?

Working at Sonic drive thru?

Will try to answer your questions from what I know about Sonic. I eat there often and know a little bit about it.

You are supposed to have a Food Handler's Permit to work at any restaurant, but that is something that is not enforced, so forget about it. Do not worry about any kind of permit. It is not checked EVER!!! You can get one later if you wish. You contact the City offices Health Inspector and he can tell you how to get one. They usually require a class about 2 hours long. But, do not worry about it. You will need to show your Social Security card and photo ID card if you have one to the hiring manager of the restaurant.

You can print off an application. DO NOT EMAIL IT. And DO NOT CALL AHEAD. It is very easy to tell you no over the phone. Hand carry the application to the restaurant and ask for the manager. ONLY give the app to the manager and NO ONE ELSE! DO NOT give it to another employee and do not leave it there!!! When you give it to the manager, say something like, "I was wondering if I could have an interview?" The whole purpose of the app is to get an interview. You will not get hired without an interview. If you can't get an interview at that time, ask,"When would it be convenient for me to come back for an interview?"

When you get an interview . . . at the end of the interview, he/she's going to ask you, "Do you have any further questions?" Say, "Yes, when can I start?" Say it with a smile. That is the killer question that will get you the job. It works!

Okay, now about the money . . . The Sonic I go to only pays the carhops $4.00 an hour, which is below the minimum wage of $7.25, so the manager is expecting you to do a good enough job that you will get enough tips to make up the difference. That is totally legal to do that and most all restaurants do that. You do not have to share your tips. They are yours. One thing you do not want to do is ask the customers if you can keep the change. Some girls do that trying to make up the difference in the hourly pay. Don't ever do that as it will get you fired. The customers will call in and complain about you and you will get fired.

The receipt does show the change, but it only shows the change amount for an even dollar purchase. Example: Suppose the bill is $6.75. The receipt will assume that the customer is going to pay you with $7.00 and will only show the change as $0.25. The receipts are printed in advance of your delivering the food, so it does not take into account exactly what money the customer is going to give you. The customer may give you a $20.00 bill, so you would then have to figure the correct change to give back. Not really difficult as it is simple math, and if you can't figure that, you shouldn't be working there.

One more thing . . . Friday and Saturday are the busiest days at restaurants, so expect to work on those 2 days or nights. Also, try to learn what the cooks do, so maybe you can work inside and get paid a higher rate.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Okay, something I forgot . . . How to get the tip . . .

You delivered the food, the customer paid you, and you have given back the change . . . you now need to stall for a few seconds to give the customer the opportunity to give you a tip. So, you hesitate and ask him if he would like more ketchup as they only put 2 packets in the bag, or would he like more napkins, or more mints, or something. You need to hesitate in leaving him, so he can give you a tip. If you just immediately walk away, you missed your chance for a tip, so stall for a few seconds and give him the opportunity to give you a tip. Say something before you leave, "have a nice day." hesitate, wait a few seconds, so he can give you that tip. Good luck.
