Bay Quackers or Ride the Ducks?

I have only taken Bay Quackers, and I had a great time! The vehicle is an original from the war, and the tour route itself is very fun. Moreover, the captain was super friendly, very informative, and quite helpful with all the questions I had. I also was very pleased to see the Bay Quackers participating in the Gay Day Parade

You would want to keep the quaker quarentined for 60 days. This means away from your tiel and in a separate room.

I'd be asking more of the reason as to why they are getting rid of the bird first? Quakers can be very loud! Demanding, obnoxious, they are one person birds, and illegal in 18 states. This is not a bird you can leave unattended like you do your tiel.

This quaker will eat your cats, not the other way around, lol. Although quakers are managable birds, they need to be supervised and not be left unattended outside of their cages.

You also don't mention the bar spacing of the cage. They need a parrot cage, not a tiel size cage. Quakers are known for breaking bars. They need stimulation to keep them from getting bored.

Good Luck!

Oh my goodness! FEED THIS BABY! The owners of the pet store should be shot for selling an unweaned baby. While I am disappointed that your family did not do the proper reaserch before getting this baby, I can relate somewhat - I wasn't exaclty sure what I was getting when I got my Pionus 8 years ago! Please start reading up on them now.

Birds are not good pets and are very specialized in their care. Properly weaning and socializing of a baby is an art in and of itself. I am very glad that you asked, but please hop online and do some research, there is only so much I have time to type!!!!

For one - make sure the formula if warm, but not too warm. You need a candy or a quick read meat thermometer to do this. It should be between 100-102 degrees for an older baby - I assume this guy is fully feathered? Colder than this and they cannot digest and may get crop stasis and/or an infection. Hotter than this and you run the risk of crop burns.

Aspiration is also a concern, and you need to feed the formula slowly, aiming away from the trachea and into the esophagus (thankfully most QUAKer, or Monk Parakeets are easy feeders). When you are facing the baby, the esophagus is on your left, the baby's right so it is easiers to rest the end of the syringe on the left side of the baby's mouth (your right), aim towards the baby's right (your left!) and depress the syringe slowly. Quakers have a very quick up and down feeding response and it is not uncommon to accidentally squirt formula all over their face! :-D The baby is full then their crop (their food storage organ, located just above the breast muscle) feels like a bean bag- full(ish!) but NOT stretched tight like an overfull balloon. When palpating (feeling) their crop, feel gently as you can cause them to reguigitate and aspirate (breathe) formula into their lungs and have a secondary pneumonia. Please know that it takes about 15-20 minutes for a baby to know it has been fed, so just because he is still beging it does NOT mean that he needs more food- check the crop to avoid overfilling.

You also need to buy a gram scale (you can use a food gram scale - NOT ounces as it is not a small enough increment to tell you much) and weigh the baby daily. They should gain just a little bit every day while being hand-fed The breast muscle should feel even, like the keel of a boat and maybe even fuller in a baby - it should NOT dip in on either side of the keel bone, as this would mean your baby is too thin.

Also, while you are reaserching handfeeding and weaning, reasearch diet! Quaker are prone to fatty liver disease, and seeds are FULL of fat. Weaning a baby onto junk food is asking for trouble. You should get a premium pellet (NO colors or artificial flavorings!) like Harrisons or TOPS. You can start with ZuPreem Natural, as it is available at pet stores, but it is not the best quality. Also, fresh foods should make up the bulk of your baby's diet (think dark colored squashes like acorn and butternut, greens like mustard, collard, kale, beet tops, chard, dandelion, cooked whole grains, soaked and or sprouted seed *sprouting or soaking seed changes the nutritional value!* and small amounts of cooked proteins - think chickpeas, lentils, mung beans et.c,). Fruit should also be offered in small amounts daily - mango, papaya, cantaloupe, figs, apples. Turst me - getting them used to it now is easier than trying to get them to convert later. I have a Pionus that I hand fed that was weaned onto seeds before I knew better - it took 5months to get him eating properly.

You should take him to an avian vet asap to get a good start. I can't help but think that a store that sold an unweaned baby might not have the best hygeine and husbandry when it comes to these guys.

Your quaker can be a great friend for the next 25-30 years, or he can become your worst nightmare. They are by nature territorial, loud and brave- they can also be cuddly, sweet and very entertaining. Your knowledge paramount in determining the direction of this baby's future - also you do now say how old your daughter is, but I am gathering that she is not too young - get her involved inthe daily care and food prep! Its a great time to bond. :-D
