How do you solve half life problems?

How do you solve half life problems?

In AP Chemistry last year, I thought of these in a logical way. There is a mathematical way (as shown by the other answerer), but I am going to do this by logic.

If you didn't already know, half-life is the amount of time of half of something to disappear.

So, for iodine, it takes 8 days for half of it to go away. So, with that in mind, let's bring some math into this....

At day 0, you have x amount of iodine present. After 8 days, you have 1/2x amount of iodine present. See what I did there? I did nothing but add 8 to the number of days and multiply by 1/2. So, 8 days later (16 days from the initial time), you have 1/4x amount of iodine.

So, the answer to your first question is 16 days.

Now, moving on. 8 (24 days) days from that time, you have 1/8x amount of iodine. 8 days after that (32 days from day 0), you have 1/16x amount of iodine. 8 days after that (40 days from day 0), you have 1/32x amount of iodine. And, finally, after 48 days from day 0, you have 1/64x amount of iodine.

So, the answer to the second question is 48 days.
