actually he may BELIEVE it himself. My own father has told some pretty out there stories in my life (think of the movie "Big Fish") One day, I was talking to my Aunt (his own SISTER) and most of the things he has told me about are complete lies. You can tell though that he actually believes the stories he tells to be true. He has told them so many times that he has convinced himself !!! It usually starts off because the person wants to impress someone, fit in with a group of people, or just make themselves seem more interesting in general. Some of them (I think my father may be one) probably have some sort of mental disorder. If you wish to remain friends with this person, just listen to the stories and if it's one you've heard before..tell it back to him !! (that works wonders with my dad, stops him in his tracks for a while) I unfortunately can't just stop being friends with my dad. Even if you know he is telling a lie, what does it really hurt ?

My father has told some pretty big whoppers, but as long as it doesn't tarnish someone else, I just go home and laugh about it with my husband .... we've tried talking to him and telling him we know that they are lies, but he only gets defensive like your friend and tells us we're nuts. Go figure !!

What is the biggest whopper of a lie you ever believed?

An ex boyfriend told me that his mother and his cousin had died in a car crash while he'd survived. He'd wake up during the night with "flashbacks" of the accident, crying about his mother. I used to worry so much about him and I'd hold him while he cried. So imagine my surprise when his mother came round to his flat one day! Turns out he was just a pathological liar and would say/do anything to get attention.
