Does the Australian government agree or disagree with the church on the issue of refugees?

The Australian Government of the present day, that is the Gillard Labor government has tried different approaches to finding a home for refugees. Not all pass Australian refugee tests and therefore are sent on to try for residency in a third country. The government has found that detention on Christmas Island and at Villawood Detention Centre and various other places throughout Australia didn't work very well.

Prime Minister Gillard has tried a deal with the Malaysian Government where by we take 4,000 refugees from places like Burma (Myanmar) Kampuchea or Vietnam in return for their taking 800 of our Afghan, Iraqi and Iranian refugees. This has been deemed to be illegal by the High Court of Australia.

The Prime Minister has also attempted to get the Manus Island Papua New Guinea Refugee Base reopened. It was established by Prime Minister John Howard as a holding place for refugees some years back.

Amnesty International says that Manus Island would be as inhumane as Nauru Island bases were.
