Who is more important, Barack Obama or the Dewey Decimal System?

The Dewey Decimal System is a way of organizing non-fiction books based on category. Without the Dewey Decimal System, librarians would have to organize their libraries based on either publisher, title, date, author, or other factors that only a few books of the hundreds out there would have in common, rather than by subject. With the Dewey Decimal System, non-fiction books related by category are found adjacent to each other. This makes it easier to find books on a specific topic that one is researching, such as art, computer science, sports, etc.

Obama represents our nation... poorly. Without Obama, our nation would not be represented(or would be represented differently). The way the world views us is, unfortunately, based on Obama's policies. It is important that the world does not hate us because we would then be in another world war. Unfortunately, Obama's policies are dividing this country sharply, meaning we are getting closer to a civil war every day.

Without the Dewey Decimal System(DDS), our libraries would fall into chaos. With Obama, our great country is still in chaos.

I'd have to say the DDS is more important, because they can at least take libraries out of chaos, and meanwhile Obama hasn't done anything to take our country out of chaos.

I'd say the DDS is better because there are no bad points to it, and meanwhile Obama has several bad points.

what is dewey decimal classification ?

what is dewey decimal classification ?

The Dewey Decimal Classification is a proprietary system of library [book] classification developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876. It divides books into different categories which is divided by certain number ranges.

000 – Computer science, information and general works

100 – Philosophy and psychology

200 – Religion

300 – Social sciences

400 – Language

500 – Science (including mathematics)

600 – Technology and applied Science [including food, recipes, etc...]

700 – Arts and recreation

800 – Literature [English]

900 – History, geography, and biography

Foreign language literature and biographies are classified according to the language which it belongs to, which is later further classified under the Dewey Decimal System starting with 796. Or DVD or VHS according to media categories.

An R = reference item, which might or might be borrowed depending on situation.

An M = martial arts novels in the Chinese language [the only genre which is classified with the letter M in some library branches, other such books in other languages varies = DHE: Diet, health & exercise, or other classifications,]

A sign with spaceship, etc... = science fiction

"3 day" sticker = library item must be returned after three days

"7 day" sticker = library item must be returned after seven days

green sticker = 7 day loan? I might have mixed this up with the one below.

red sticker = 3 days loan? I might have mixed up the one above.

All items could be requested, as an inter-library [branch] loan if not currently in the branch visited.

There might be new classifications within these 10 years [mostly minor changes or some reshelving of books via removal to another library branch or removed to archives for later retrieval, re-donation or sale of older books, etc...].

What system of organization did library’s use before the Dewey Decimal System?

What system of organization did library's use before the Dewey Decimal System?

Well, THAT is the root of the problem, there was no defined system. Many libraries were simply in alphabetic order by author or title or whatever system the curator wanted to use that day... Scrolls in Alexandria were organized by date... can you imagine how hard it was to find one particular scroll? It was the job of the librarians to know the contents of the scrolls from memory...

Holidays also on this date Tuesday, December 10, 2024...
