Are nobel prizes as prestigious as they were back in the day?

I still think the Nobel Prizes are still prestigious.

All except the Peace one, unfortunately...

The Peace Prize, I think, has diminished in regards of a few recipients. Notably, I don't like it when some people basically pat themselves on the back, when I don't think they deserve it, in the case of the EU and UN winning it. Of course, I also don't like rewarding potential, as in the case of Barack Obama, when there were others who had done remarkable things but were not as big of a name. Lastly, I have Israeli family,so I'm against Arafat, who devoted his life to the opposite, winning it one year as well.

what is a Nobel prize?

what is a Nobel prize?

The Nobel Prize (Swedish: Nobelpriset), as designated in Alfred Nobel's will in 1895, is awarded in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. The Prize in Economics ("The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel") was instituted by the Bank of Sweden in 1968. The five Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901, while the first Prize in Economics was awarded in 1969. The Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Literature, and Physiology or Medicine and the Prize in Economics are widely regarded as the most prestigious award one can receive in those fields. The Nobel Peace Prize conveys social prestige, and that award also is often politically controversial. With the exception of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economics are presented in Stockholm at a formal annual ceremony on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death. The Nobel Peace Prize and its recipients' lectures are presented at a formal annual ceremony in Oslo, Norway, also on December 10.[1][2] The lectures by the recipients of the "Swedish Prizes" (those awarded in Stockholm) occur in the days prior to December 10.[3] "Since the Nobel Prize is regarded by far as the most prestigious prize in the world, the Award Ceremonies as well as the Banquets in Stockholm and Oslo on 10 December have been transformed from local Swedish and Norwegian arrangements into major international events that receive worldwide coverage by the print media, radio and television."[3]
