Are The Terms 'Spinster' or 'Old Maid' Still Used Today?
I don't know that anyone feels these terms are "un-PC", but they're seldom used. These names come from a time when a woman's goal in life was to marry and have children. When she reached a certain age, she was called old maid and spinster, insinuating she was past her prime to be able to lure a man into marriage, or to bear children. Most older, unmarried people these days are that way by choice, the terms spinster and old maid no longer seem valid. They are simply single people.

I watched an old "Waltons"and was reminded how at one time there were "Old Maids" and many were sisters, why?
Back then, women were expected to get married, and if they didn't, they were labeled as Old maids or spinsters. Now women are more career oriented and if they don't get married it is not that big of a deal anymore.
