Take A Hike Day

Have A Hike Day is either about opting for an exciting walk, or telling somebody to obtain lost – we’ll leave the interpretation your decision!

What to bring day hiking?

Normal stuff:

* Water, as others have mentioned. At least 2 liters per person.

* Snack

* Lunch (if going out all day)

* Sun hat, bandanna or buff to keep the sun off your head

* Sunglasses

* Sunscreen

* Insect Repellent

* Map of the area

* Compass

* Notebook and pencil (journal)

* Camera

Sometimes things don't go as planned. I like to carry some extra items in my day pack to handle unexpected problems. I've used most of these items at one time or another, either for myself or someone encountered along the trails:

* Rain gear

* Synthetic-fleece hoodie or jacket

* Headlamp or flashlight w/extra batteries

* Pocket knife, Swiss Army Knife or multi-tool

* Cell phone (in waterproof bag or container)

* First aid kit

* Water purification tablets or drops (or filter)

* Storm-proof matches in waterproof container

* Extra food that doesn't need to be cooked, such as:

--- Jerky

--- Foil packets of tuna, salmon, chicken

--- Peanut butter

--- Crackers

--- MRE

* Duct tape (shoe/gear repairs, build shelter)

* Paracord (make shoe laces, shelter)

* Small sewing kit + safety pins

* Contractor-size trash bag (shelter)

* Large emergency blanket

* Signal whistle

* Signal mirror

Finally, it's always a good practice to let someone responsible know where you're going and when you expect to return. This way if things do go wrong you can be confident that someone will come looking for you.

What is the best day hike in Yosemite?

What is the best day hike in Yosemite?

Half Dome is undoubtedly the most strenuous hike in Yosemite, so every hike in Yosemite would qualify as "less strenuous". If you want something challenging and with great views, try hiking to the top of Upper Yosemite Falls from the valley floor. It's a pretty strenuous hike, takes probably 3-5 hours going up (faster going down, of course), and the views are amazing at the top. Bring plenty of water and snacks!

If you want something significantly less strenuous and shorter, then without a doubt, I recommend the Mist Trail to the top of Vernal Falls. It takes a couple of hours round trip (more if you linger awhile at the top of the falls, which is highly recommended.) But be prepared to get seriously wet if you go during the spring or early-to-mid summer - Many people aren't prepared for just how wet the "mist" makes you! Thankfully though the "wet" portion of the trial is relatively short and you'll dry off quickly in the sun at the top of the falls, especially if you wear quick-drying fabrics (leave your cotton shirt at home.)

What to take on a 6 day Hike?

Food is fuel. Normal walking (without carrying a pack) at a brisk pace for 8 hours in a day will consume 2000 calories. If you're hitting a lot of hills, you'll increase your calorie consumption. Also, carrying a pack will increase your consumption. Fast hikers (25-30 miles per day) can consume as much as 4000 or more calories in a day.

I tend to take it easy on the trail, so I pack about 1500 calories of food per day and let my body provide the rest. I find packing less food frees up space and reduces weight in my pack.

For water, find out how many and the quality of water sources of where you are going. The drier the weather, the more water you need. The absolute minimum is 2L per person, per day. The drier it is, and the harder you push your body, the more you will need. If you're trying to pack in all your water, you're going to need to carry at least 12L of water with you, but I would recommend having more.

If you go to a camping store, you will find water jugs and water bags. If you are going to put them in your backpack, water bags work better. You can also buy the type with a drinking tube attached, so that you can drink from the bag without taking it out of your pack.

Also, bring along some salt or salty food. If you are finding yourself regularly thirsty, a little extra salt in your system can help you absorb water more efficiently.
