In your opinion, how does the land line telephone affect your life?

It would be a change for the worse. Believe it or not people still use their land line phones. You also have to keep in mind that unless you're buying a prepaid cell phone, cell phone companies are usually based on credit. Not to mention that cell phone towers do go down(it happens in my area from time to time). I work in telecommunications and we use land lines for almost everything. Not to mention, land lines(unless you have a cordless phone) are the only communication device that will still run during a power outage. Cell phones rely on batter power that need to be charged. What happens if the power is out for days on in? Also it's easier to locate a land line location from a dispatch center than a wireless signal(especially if you live in the outskirts of town).

I have a cell phone, but I seldom use it. I like my att land line service and dsl internet connection.

How independent of the power grid are traditional land line telephones?

How independent of the power grid are traditional land line telephones?

It is still possible but no longer certain. These POTS phones are/were powered by a central 50 volt battery at the exchange and this usually has multiple redundancy, so yes generators that cut in automatically. However phone lines are often digital (fibre) in the distribution between the exchange and the subscriber, and these parts of the system probably not so heavily backed up (power wise) nowadays, just batteries wherever the node is, which run down after a few days I expect. You would not be aware that you have such a connection, it works the same at the house. Such is the march of progress.

As far as where you could call, anywhere in the world that had not failed for some other reason. All the infrastructure tends to be well backed up power wise, with alternate routes and such. So for a fiction story it is reasonable.
