The Peace Corps requires NO commitment regarding length of service (people can and do quit during their first week). However, Peace Corps asks that you make a pledge to serve the full 27-month tour (3 months of training & 2 years of service), but they don’t hassle you if want to go home early.

You accrue 2 days of vacation for every month of service. These vacation days can be spent wherever you please (e.g., traveling around your country of service, Australia, Europe, back in the U.S. with mom and dad, wherever).

While you serve you are given a “living allowance” to pay for your food, housing, clothes, entertainment, and alcohol. Also each PC country has a “Peace Corps Medical Unit” staffed with doctors and nurses. The sole function of this medical unit is to take care the medical needs of Peace Corps Volunteers.

You also get $225 dollars per month of service after you complete your service; 27 months x $225 = a $6,075 tax-free check Uncle Sam gives you when you finish. This is called a “readjustment allowance.”

Also Peace Corps assignments are all around the world (Africa, Central America, South America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific).

Peace Corp?

It is spelled Peace Corps, just like the Marine Corps or the Corps of Engineers. You didn't do as badly as a woman who wrote to me once when I was in Borneo and spelled it "Piece Core", though.

The Peace Corps doesn't push people on other countries. They wait until other countries ask if they have a math teacher, farm advisor, water system engineer . . ., then, if they do and he is reasonable in other aspects, they send him (or her.) There isn't a lot of demand for social scientists in th edeveloping world. Your chance sof getting an invitation are better if you major in something that developing countries want.

Exactly what they want changes. In my day, 35 years ago, they needed English teachers. Today small business accountants are really hot. Call a recruiter and ask for a forecast, based on how long it is until you finish college.
