Usually, a Little League team from a town or region is composed of the best players from that area. And the work to make it to the LLWS starts long before the summer. The 12 best players have to make it to their area's all-star team. They compete in area competitions and state championships before the regional tournaments that qualify winners for the LLWS.

There are eight U.S. regions (New England, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest, Midwest, Great Lakes, West) and eight international regions (Canada, Europe, Latin America, Middle East/Africa, Caribbean, Mexico, Japan, and Asia-Pacific). The eight U.S. teams play for the U.S. title, while the eight international teams play for the international championship. Then the U.S. winner and the international champion play for the overall LLWS championship.
