Charged for losing a library book I returned?

I borrowed a book from the school library when was in college, returned it, and later found my grades wouldn't be released because I supposedly hadn't returned it. I went back to the library and found the book sitting on the shelf, right where it was supposed to be. So, going to the library and looking at the shelf might be worth trying.

how long is polite to keep a book before returning it?

Well, I usually try to read it right away & return it so I don't forget... but when I lend someone a book of my own, I only lend it out after I'm done reading it myself and I really don't care if it takes several months, as long as I get it back eventually. I do re-read, but rarely within the year, so it's not like I need it in the meantime.

I'm also a member of BookCrossing, a book club where people give their used books away, but we also have books we only lend out and send to a lot of people in turn (book rings). For those books, we usually request people to read them in a month, give or take a few days.

In short, it sort of depends on your situation and the agreement you've made with your friend! If you really have no time now, I'd ask your friend if he minds if you keep it a few weeks longer, or he'd rather want it back & you can borrow it at some later time.
