Is my dog in danger of being anti-social?
There are many vets who disagree with the isolation concept. Certainly you do have to be careful, but taking certain precautions, people should get their dogs out and about as soon as possible. The age of 9 months is the very beginning of doggie adolescence. It is very important to obedience train and get her out and socializing. Because of the way she has become, you will need to desensitize her to many situations. She trusts your family and shows it in her demeanor...now she has to really trust you enough to let you take care of her anxiety out of doors.
One of the best things I have learned in my training classes is that is if you have a problem, it will not go away unless confronted and extinguished. If one issue is loose leash walking, then work on that ...consistently , every day until she is doing better. And walk, walk, walk.
Until I got my dog and began traipsing around the neighborhood, I did not know anyone with dogs either. While walking, I met at least 4 people in my immediate area that I now walk with on a regular basis. 2 of those dogs are x large and my dog did NOT want to hang with them...after walking together a few times, they don't play or interact, but they all accept each others' presence and walk amiably. The smaller dogs have become fast friends. We find an empty school field and let them off leash to run and play because we know there will be no problems.
My advice to you is to continue working on the training. It needs to be sharper. Work specifically on loose leash heel....and also on sit/watch me. That is an important skill to master for a dog you want to desensitize. Once she can do that, whenever she becomes anxious at another dog's approach, you put her in a sit/watch me and don't allow her to make eye contact. As she becomes more relaxed you can get closer to the other dog and allow a greeting. Try to encourage greeting face to butt...not face to face. Some dogs (like mine) do not like the face to face thing..and if they react, they are closer to a bite than if they were sniffing out some other dog's behind.
From what you say, you haven't been doing anything "wrong", you just need to step up the training (adolescents don't like to listen, though males are usually worse), and get out there and find dogs to slowly greet...the more you walk, the more you will find!
You might try finding a doggie day care where you could bring your dog once in a while and let her greet and play under supervised circumstances. You would need to do your homework though, some of these places are good but many might not be right for your dog.
Last, find the money for the classes....you won't believe how worth it it is...I had to scrape up the fee, even contributing some birthday cash to join a very expensive private training thing...5 lessons, but after that..group classes free for the life of the dog. I do go 2x a week and have been doing this for a year...it is constant reinforcement for my well behaved dog, it is great socialization for the dogs who do playtime after class, and I find it really fun. We members often organize group events, like going hiking in a dog friendly state park, or heading out to a dog beach and outdoor eatery. Cheap things to do, great fun.
How terrific of you to adopt a shelter dog and want to do all of the best things for her! Hope you achieve your goals....good luck.
