Welcome to Alaska! I guess they already had their Ice Worm Festival, that’s in late January or early February; kinda neat I’ve been told. The museum there has some Native American artifacts, mining stuff from the old days, so that may be worth checking out. I’ve never been there but flew over it dozens of times. Since its winter things are snow oriented with skiing and snow boarding in the mountains. The bears are denned up, salmon run months away, so you’re hitting it at a rather slow time. But there are still mountain goats and other wildlife to see. Beware of local girls at the bars! This goes for all small towns in Alaska. Some will get drunk and become VERY aggressive! A wonderful way to get a STD or end up in an altercation with their boyfriend or husband. That’s no reflection on the nice ladies we have here who have class but I mention it because it only takes one of those crazy gals to ruin a guys day.

There should be deer, goat and wolf hunting going on there now. Duck season is likely over but that’s popular there. They have some nice restaurants that serve locally caught sea food and at low tide shell fish are easy to find.

Maybe someone with more info can chime in. My info is from many Alaskan friends who lived, worked or visited there. It is what it is; a small mining town. But it has beautiful scenery and some very nice people.
