I am cutting and pasting below an excerpt from a letter that my daughter, a captain in the Army serving currently in Iraq, drafted for her commanding officer to send out to the troops in his command. It might give you a view of this from a perspective you won't find on the internet.

"In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

On June 1, 1954, in recognition of the nobility of all members of the Armed Forces who have fought for or are fighting for the United States, the name was officially changed to Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is a day of gratitude to all who raised their hand when their country called, who took an oath to serve and protect our Nation, who fought with courage under a banner of liberty in lands that were far from home. America takes this day to honor with fierce pride those men and women in uniform, past and present, whose contributions to the safety and security of our way of life cannot be overstated.
