How important is Victoria Day in Canada?

Victoria Day is a Federal holiday, which means its a statutory day off across all of Canada. It has been celebrated since before Canada was an official country in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday....Its always on the Monday before/on the 24th. It is ALSO considered the unofficial start of summer and the end of the Winter social season...VD became an actual holiday in 1845.

For most Canadians these days, it is a celebration of the start of summer. Its usually the first long weekend with nice weather, time to get things in order in your yard, open up your cottage for the year, take the boat out or make that first camping trip. I don't think you will find many of us sitting round, toasting the Queen or discussing her.....its a weekend of family, friends, fun and activities. Who wouldn't celebrat that?

And yes, it is also celebrated in Quebec, but called Fete de la Reine obviously.

I dislike how you assume every Quebecois is automatically a Habs fan.....

what is victoria's day about?

Victoria Day (in French: Fête de la Reine), colloquially known as May Two-four, May Long, or May Run is a federal Canadian statutory holiday celebrated on the last Monday before or on 24 May, in honour of both Queen Victoria's birthday and the current reigning Canadian sovereign's official birthday, and is also considered an informal mark of the beginning of the summer season. It has been observed since before Canada was formed, originally falling on the sovereign's actual birthday, and continues to be celebrated in various fashions across the country on the fixed date of the first Monday on or before 24 May. However, since the Quiet Revolution in Quebec, the same day was unofficially known in the province as Fête de Dollard until 2003, when provincial legislation officially named the same date as Victoria Day the National Patriots' Day.

Victoria Day Fireworks in Brantford, ON, Canada?

Victoria Day Fireworks in Brantford, ON, Canada?

Victoria Day (May 20) was four days ago, so I guess the question is moot at this point. But what I can tell you is that I am not aware of any "official" fireworks displays that are done in any cities across Canada for Victoria Day. That is usually reserved for Canada Day.

Now Brantford is not far from the US border, and Americans are celebrating Memorial Day on Monday (May 27) and they may have some fireworks shows planned for that evening, maybe in places like Buffalo NY, or perhaps Erie PA. You might be able to see some from the shoreline of Lake Erie.
