Applesauce Doughnuts

Prep Time:15 min

Start to Finish:1 hr 20 min

Makes:18 doughnuts

3 1/3 cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour

1 cup applesauce

3/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons shortening

3 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

Vegetable oil

Cinnamon-sugar mixture, if desired

1. Beat 1 1/3 cups of the flour and the remaining ingredients except oil and cinnamon-sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, until blended. Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in remaining 2 cups flour. Cover and refrigerate about 1 hour or until dough stiffens.

2. Heat oil (2 to 3 inches) in deep fryer or 3-quart saucepan to 375ºF. Divide dough in half. Place half of the dough on well-floured cloth-covered surface; gently roll in flour to coat. Gently roll dough 3/8 inch thick. Cut with floured doughnut cutter. Repeat with remaining dough.

3. Slide doughnuts into hot oil, using wide spatula. Turn doughnuts as they rise to surface. Fry 1 to 1 1/2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Carefully remove from oil (do not prick surfaces); drain on paper towels. Sprinkle hot doughnuts with cinnamon-sugar.

(Total time will vary; cook or bake time is per batch.)

how many doughnuts a day to cause weight gain?

how many doughnuts a day to cause weight gain?

lol, if only it were that simple..

There isn't a set number of doughnuts that will or willnot make someone gain weight. If you are an extremely active athlete (i.e. Michael Phelps) you could probably eat a dozen without gaining weight. It's all about the calories you consume vs. the calories you burn.

You can use a Basal Metabolic Rate (MBR) calculator to determine how many calories your body needs to maintain your current weight. More than this amount will cause weight gain, less will promote weight loss.

So - back to the doughnuts. Lets say 1 doughnut is 300 calories. Suppose your BMR calculates to 2000 calories a day. You could eat ~6.6 doughnuts and not gain weight if that was the only thing you ate all day. You could have 1 doughnut and not gain weight so long as the rest of your meals throughout the day do not exceed 1700 calories.

Does that make sense?

Is it okay to eat doughnuts that will expire the next day?

Is it okay to eat doughnuts that will expire the next day?

Sure. As food items go, doughnuts don't really "spoil" like other perishable foods. Because doughnuts are made of mostly cake (doughnut) and sugar (frosting), the worst that could happen is the oil that it was cooked in could go bad.

This is very unlikely to happen with a doughnut which is only a day past expiration (or weeks for that matter). The companies who make doughnuts have those expiration dates to ensure "freshness" and not really healthfulness.

You probably wouldn't want to eat a doughnut where the oil had gone bad, but then you wouldn't need the expiration date to know that; it would smell pretty bad. Even if you did choke one down, it probably wouldn't kill you; just give you a sore tummy for a while.

There's a site that has info on doughnuts. I'll post a link to it.
