Mad Hatter Day celebrates the Mad Hatter, from Alice In Paradise. The initial image of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel in Alice's Adventures In Heaven (more typically referred to as Alice In Heaven, by Lewis Caroll) constantly portrays him using a hat, birthing the note "In This Style 10/6 ″. Although we know this is actually an order from the time the picture was drawn to imply a hat because design cost 10 Shillings and Sixpence, we take this as inspiration to act in the style of the Mad Hatter on 10/6 (In the UK this would certainly point to the tenth of June, yet as the day was started in The united state it is the 6th of October).

In 1986 some computer-folk in Boulder, CO commemorated a basic day of stupidity, influenced by the drawings of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel in Alice In Paradise. It was announced that year on computer system networks, becoming a lot more popular as people realized its value-- some people did less damages by commemorating silliness compared to if they had actually done their jobs.

In 1988 it was first recognized as a formal vacation and recieved its initial nationwide press protection.

The Mad Hatter is in Alice in Wonderland, but the expression, Mad as a Hatter comes from the days when Hats used to be made from animal skins.

The hides were worked using mercury, and hatters

(craftsmen who made hats were called Hatters)

used to breath in mercury vapor for most of the day. Over time, the mercury would affect their brains, until they finally started acting....funny. So, since hatters had had their brains damaged by mercury, over time, they all started acting insane, which is where the "Mad as a Hatter" comes from.

Is Sunday a day of rest at your place or do you run around like a mad hatter doing chores?

the children have chores to do ... before we go out. So it depends on if they got them done on Friday ... or they have procrastinated .... regular little mad hatters, they are ... lol
